Are you saying Arkansas should have been able to snag a top coach in April during the middle of our Spring practice? Sorry, I can't remember if you are a typical rantard, I don't think you are...
I'm just saying that at any time in the year, y'all should be able to secure the services of a head coach other than John L. Smith. I get that you might not snag the "top" choice for a coach, due to the timing. But there's levels. And IMO, from day one, JLS was not EVER the level coach that should be chosen by an SEC team. Not even a Kentucky. I honestly never got that.

So we should've hired a worse coach than what we could get with a full coaching search just because we might get 3 more wins this year but be shittier in the long run? How about no

It was either hire JLS as an interim for 10 months or hire a shitty coach for 3-4 years, who would probably be the only type to leave his school in April. I'd gladly take the interim route.

because I'm sure coaches were lining up to be an interim head coach. Even with this season one year of John L would be better than multiple years of whoever we would've gotten in the spring.

He was hired brought in as an Interim, mainly because he has over a decade of head coach experience and had been on staff for three years, added continuity since we replaced both coordinators in the off-season, he was never a long term solution. There was not another option on staff to be promoted to an interim, no one else had HC experience on any level. The pool out there of available HC consisted of Butch Davis who wasn't clear of the UNC scandal and Phil Fulmer who wanted a long term deal. So the thought was JLS would handle HC duties, media mainly and the assistants would do their job and salvage the season the best we could and re-evaluate at this time. Yea, it didn't work, hindsight works this way. Ohio State wasn't able to replace Tressel in the spring time either and went through a season with an interim, so I don't see why this is such a big deal.

Did anybody outside of Long and JLS think it WOULD work? It was obvious from the jump that this had dumpster fire written all over it.

Boy, all of you Arky fans are missing it. What does it say about your university that you were forced to hire a guy like John L Smith for 10 months, with the talent of a top 5 team (allegedly)? You can disagree with me, I get that. But I'm saying, I listened to Arky fans go on and on and on about having unlimited purse strings. I listened to constant speculation that it was going to be John Gruden. If you are a big time football program, you can hire an elite coach at any time of the year. Because big name coaches will leave whatever they are doing, at any time, to step up to a major university. Are there better times to hire than others? Sure. But to accept that hey, the best you could do was hire a John L. Smith for 10 months? I don't get that. And I don't think any of the top half of the football schools in the SEC would have made that hire in a million years.

Well, some thought the assistants were good enough to have a decent season on their own, I'm not talking about the fan MNC talk. The new Defensive staff came in and shut down K-State in the bowl game and Paul Petrino was returning to an offensive staff that was good in their own right. So win the SEC, BCS Bowl, blah, blah, blah? No. As bad is it was? No. 6-8 wins, yes, which would been a decent salvage job considering we had to fire our HC during the middle of spring practice.

I didn't think we'd be THIS bad. We had a lot of faith in coordinators, they failed as badly as John L did season. Total team failure.

You clearly forgot how things turned out for him at Michigan St. He lost to a team that was on a 10 conference game losing streak during his final year there.

OK. He did a good job as an assistant here. He was a good HC up until he went to Michigan State, He turned the Louisville program around. No idea what happened at Michigan State, but it destroyed his HC career.

So you've realized that at our lowest of lows, we are still your superior. Pigs are slow, but the ugly little frickers can actually learn.

20,000 empty seats doesn't equal superior at anything. Just means you have more people and increasingly more and more of those people think you suck and have better shite to do like watching Arkansas 11am games.
