True. I don't consider state workers to be "on the take" but it is interesting if over over 50% is dependent (working or not working) on the government.

I didn't read the link, but I assume military, fire and police are included in the "taker" pile. Which of these leeches should we discard first? That's assuming we've already kicked sanitation workers, prison guards and those on scholarship at public universities to the curb. Down with the leeches, I say!

Also, did they make sure that every corporation/entity/ individual that has received grants/subsidies/assistance and tax breaks as takers, if their subsidy was greater than their tax burden?

If a private hospital has a 60% Medicare patient mix are they considered a "taker" or a "maker"? If a mom and pop grocery store accepted food stamps, does that make them a "taker"?

Also I know for the sake of this particular argument a public school is a public school, but in a general sense I don't consider public universities quite the same thing as a public high school. If you want to discuss those merits we need another thread. But even though I didn't go to private university, they do exist, and they do pretty well.

They are not the same. They do, however, have in common the use of a hell of lot of public funds.

To your previous post - I say obviously because if I went to LSU I must have gotten my private education at another point in life. And to your point about using lots of funds - yes, they do. But if we're talking about differences, IMO there's not much reason to spend $40k a year to go to a private college when you get a good education at a public school. If you're living in a shitty school district like Orleans, though, you send your kids to private high school so they are prepared for college. In relation to this thread though, education COULD be privatized, people just might not like it.

You can privatize anything in this thread. You could privatize a police force if you wanted to pay for it. We already privatize parts of our prison system here. If you privatize them, does that make them makers instead of takers? They do the same job.

Does that include the military? I don't know you can conclude much from this. I see four red states, four blue states, and three swing states.

Not really. Consider Obamacare. The IRS hired 4000 new agents to implement obamacare. That is a net drain on the economy. IRS workers are paid by with taxpayer dollars, and contribute nothing back to the GDP. Fewer government workers = better fiscally sound state.

Not really. Spending in the defense department promotes spending in the private sector (contractors, etc...). Spending, however, could be cut in defense, but only after entitlements are cut in half. Entitlement spending is 3 or 4 times that of defense spending.

This can't *possibly* be true. I've build told as nauseum that government spending has no impact on the private sector. Next thing you know, you damned Keynesians will want to build bridges, roads and schools and put *that* money in the private sector. Then what do you have? More leeches and takers, that's what.

I worked for a public hospital. We could only spend what we could collect in revenue. We got very little from the state. We had close to $1B budget. Probably a couple of hundred million was spent with local vendors (medical supply, automobiles, food services, electricity, natural gas, gasoline, uniforms, and many, many other things). Again, very little in the way of state funds. Were we makers or takers because we would surely fall into the category of "takers" in the stupid report.

I went to private school as well k-12. I am saying most people can't afford that. How shitty would private schools for poor people be? the Walmart of schools wouldn't work. Vouchers are Government money too.
