Pick a few restaurants or museums-but take a map and wander. Sit outside slot and soak up the scenery. People watch. Wash your jeans right after bc the ends of them will smell like absolute shite after one day. Oh and drink early so you can do the buy one beer get three deals in the quarter.

One thousand for 4 days? Ehhhh What area are you staying & what type of places are you looking to eat? Hard to determine what you are expecting with that budget. But it can be done with some more information

Check out the piano bar at Pat O'Brienzs. Take a riverboat ride on the Natchez. Stanley's for Breakfast. Take a carriage ride from Jackson square. D-day museum. Frenchman Street. Harrah's casino if you like to Gamble. French quarter festival is the best festival to attend. Charbroiled oyster at Drago's or Acme oyster house(there awesome, even if you don't like oysters, you'll like these). Just a few random ideas. Enjoy

Don't go in the summer. It's so miserable outside. Go in March/April so you can actually enjoy being outside.

That's the St. Louis Cathedral There are so many good/great places to eat, you'll have to live there over a year just to eat at them all just once. All that I have to add is, please, PLEASE, do more than just downtown. New Orleans has so much to do and offer without even going downtown.

I recommend taking weather into heavy consideration. Walking the quarter in the heat is one of the most miserable things a human being can do. Napoleon house is one of my favorite places to just stop and grab a few drinks and just chill for a minute. They are known for their Pimms cup. Its a refreshing drink with gin, cucumber and some other shite. Doesnt sound very good, but it is. They work too, dont let it fool you I would recommend heading to Laffite's Blacksmith Shop on Saturday night. Be prepared to brave the "different"part of Bourbon St. Just keep walking north on Bourbon and its on the left. Its the oldest bar in the country and its an awesome atmosphere. Its an old blacksmith shop that has been turned into a bar. Go pop a squat at the piano in the back and make a few requests (not Piano Man). The reason I say go Saturday is because thats when Mike normally plays. He is by far the best one that plays there.

You can stay in a 3-4 star hotel downtown for under $100 during that time of year. But I agree about trying to go in the Spring when it is cooler.

Places to eat: Gallitorie's (or however it's spelled), Commander's Palace, Brennan's, Couchon, Liuzza's, Parkway, Oceania's (The Old New Orleans Cookery), 5 Happiness, Emeril's Delmonico Do's: French Market, Frenchman Street, Audubon Park, see the inside of St. Louis Cathedral, City Park, Tipitina's, Maple Leaf Tavern, Cabildo, Mardi Gras World, Bullet's Bar (warning, this is in a sketch neighborhood so take a cab there and back), National World War II Museum, bars in the Warehouse District, Cafe Du Monde, listen to Brass Bands (and tip them well), Howlin' Wolf, any local festival that's going on at the time (there's always a festival) don'ts: don't eat at Hard Rock Cafe or the House of Blues, don't waste your time shopping at the River Walk (it's just a mall), avoid the West Bank, don't venture north of Rampart or the interstate, probably best to skip the ghost tour, Also, if you have time, take a trip up to the Northshore and bike the Tammany Trace (if you're into that sort of thing). One end of the trail ends right near the Abita Brewery where you can take the brew tour and have dinner at the pub. The Covington Brew House (home of Heiner Brau and Covington) and Fountainbleu state Park are also along that trail.
