$500,000 more doesn't put him in any elite category, so the raise was unnecessary 'in nature'
Then Arkansas had nothing to do with his raise did it? Because if it had, one would expect the raise to be significantly more- equal or nearly equal to the alleged offer. Since it wasn't, either the alleged offer wasn't a serious factor, or Miles' agent is not a good negotiator. I think the former makes more sense than the latter.

If things actually worked this way you'd have coaches for life, on the theory that each year's recruiting class must be guaranteed to play under that coach. Sorry, but that's not the way this—or life for that matter—works.

Plus you have no fricking clue if miles said here is what arkansas offered, give me more or i walk.
In fact, I strongly doubt he said anything like this. The far more likely scenario is that Miles or his agent made LSU aware of the offer and asked for an opportunity to discuss Miles' situation with the LSU powers that be. That's how these things are customarily handled.
You demanded that I "stfu" however, given your complete ignorance of this type of negotiating process, I submit that you are the one who would best serve this discussion by dropping out of the conversation.

No. It was just Alleva giving into the situation instead of being a man and holding his ground.
You don't just fold and throw out numbers for a raise just because there is preliminary interest from another school.
You have no idea how the talks went down. It could have just been two friends talking about who the next coach would be, then Long slips in something like, "how much would it take to get you to come here?" ... shite gets leaked and boom, you have a story.

Given Miles' history, why isn't it just as possible that he walked in, said my friend from Arky called and talked about offering me a position. What can we do to prevent the rumor mill from gettin out of hand? Like I said before, Les is a great person, and no one is giving him credit for his history of doing the right thing. Everyone just assumes that all head coaches are spiteful, greedy bastards.

This makes no sense. On the one hand, you seem to think the Arkansas thing seriously affected the negotiation. But then you seem to think the amount was just randomly decided by Alleva and Miles. Negotiations were under way between Miles and LSU well before the Arkansas matter arose. The raise might have already been largely agreed to for all we know before Arkansas came up. All we can tell for certain is that the timing of the negotiations changed, but there is precious little to suggest that the amount or extension were seriously impacted by the Arkansas discussion. You seem to acknowledge that none of us know exactly what occurred. I agree. But I see no reason why Alleva wouldn't have given a raise. It is well-earned; it is normal (given no raise for 5 previous years and the success in between now and the last raise). The amount is certainly reasonable. I doubt that Alleva folded because of Arkansas. He knew it wasn't serious from the beginning, undoubtedly, as virtually everyone else did.
But as you note, we don't know exactl;y what happened. So why all the speculation and rancor? What we know is that he got a raise in a reasonable amount that in all likelihood he would have gotten without the Arkansas discussion. The only real impact seems to be the timing. Normally the announcement would have been made after the bowl game. But because of the speculation and buzz, the announcement was made to quell all of this quickly to prevent more damage and possible negative effects (such as recruiting).

nope. just smart people that know how to get when they are in demand. Using the market isnt being greedy. Getting paid what someone is willing to pay you isnt spiteful.

So how does not even make it more likely Miles used the Arkansas offer to his advantage? If he knew it was time to talk numbers, hwy not try and increase the numbers by leaking an overblown offer from Arkansas as a ceiling figure.

I agree.
I'm glad he stayed but I don't think he deserved a raise.
Keep in mind all you posi-sheeple tiger fans... We are the ones that get to pick up the tab.

Probably not, since they didn't offer most likely. His agent played the system.

for a whopping $500,000. this just shows to me that all the Arky offer did was change the timetable.

Because the amount seems to indicate that Arkansas wasn't a huge factor. If it was serious factor, why not a much larger raise. Alleva knew it wasn't serious. Why would it have a dramatic impact?

Not to mention the fact that only a moron would do what the other poster wrote: "miles said here is what arkansas offered, give me more or i walk." This shows a less-than-grade school comprehension of how these matters unfold.

Well, for one Patrick's facts are more accurate than yours.. He received a raise two year ago. Personally, I don't approve of giving a raise in a year that you didn't even win the western division of our conference. No argument here about what Miles has accomplished. I just think you give a raise in a year he brings home some sort of hardware. It's a principle thing for me and evidently others.

These issues played out in a very public manner, and both Miles and LSU knew the prominent coverage being given the Arkansas interest.
Both parties would have been better served, if there were previous negotiations, to delay the conclsuion of a deal by a couple of weeks to avoid the appearances of impropriety.
That is,unless the Arky interest in FACT played a significant role.
That's why all these posts/ threads have dominated the boards for the last two days.

Exactly my point. The situation was either severely mismanaged or Miles is guilty of whoring out for the 3rd time to earn a raise.
If the contract was indeed already on the slate, miles should have shot down the Arky rumor immediately and both parties should have waited 4 weeks and made a completely unrelated release of the increase in the contract.

The timing is not coincidence, no matter how much The Tards want to believe otherwise.
To fail to consider the apprearances of this is just too stupid to believe...
I lsot respect for both Miles and Alleva as a result.
