what is it with Johnson that made him such a failure?
The assistants he hired was the first problem. He went into the first game of the year planning to play three QBs. That's just a bad idea. After that game with Nebraska he said “When we subbed quarterbacks and switched a little bit of our game plan — let’s face it, we weren’t going to win the football game in the third quarter,” the Golden Eagles’ first-year coach said. “It was more about trying to improve our football team.” The score was 28-17 at that time. He used the Nebraska game as a scrimmage. I don't think he ever intended to win the game. Before the 2nd game he said (paraphrasing) "We'll name the starter and WHEN he starts to play poorly we'll pull him." Not "if". "When". Late in the year he said (paraphrasing again but very close to this)"If we feel like we're doing things the right way, the results don't matter. We're going to keep doing it". After about 6 losses he said "If we ever win a game, these players are going to be hard to control." Not "when we win." "If" After one loss he said the players didn't learn fundamentals from their pee-wee coaches. And in the UTEP game, USM scored to get within one point with 3 minutes left. He went for two.

I wouldn't be surprised if Southern Miss hired a JUCO coach if the financial situation is as bad as people say.
It must not be as bad as people say, or they wouldn't have fired Johnson.

A guy I know in the AD says they can probably spend around $750,000 per for a new coach.. which is what EJ was making. Like I said earlier, USM will get $3 million each from Nebraska and Arkansas games plus portions of the exit fees of the team leaving the conference.

Their athletic department has lost money for 3 straight years.

Brett Favre is an offensive coordinator at a Hattiesburg high school. I heard he could be moving up the coaching ranks. Just kidding, but just imagine what ESPN would do.

No way Hudspeth leaves Lafayette for what would be a lateral, if not backward, move. He is getting paid $750K with boosters that could push that up to a million or so. Now, if Mullen leaves Mississippi State for, let's say, Arkansas ... then yes, there's a good chance we lose Hudspeth. But not to Southern Miss.

No, no and no. At Houston he had Keenum to make him look good and this year he's got Manziel to make him look the same.

Hud is making more here than Ellis Johnson was making at USM. Southern Miss just went 0-12 and CUSA and the Sun Belt aren't much different, doubt he leaves.
Yea, dont think he would leave for this job.

Supposedly Jason Simpson was at the the USM basketball game last night. This change could happen very fast. UT-Martin was 8-3 this year. Simpson is a USM alum and would be a type of guy to unite the fanbase.

I had never heard of Simpson until I saw someone tweet he was at the game last night. Would be a good hire. He could be a guy who may actually want to stay and build the program.
