And I have stumbled in my time
I left my footprints down the road
And the part of me that shines
Ain't the part of me that's showed
guy clark, maybe i can paint over that

Haunting.

quote:

if today was not a crooked highway
If tonight was not a crooked trail
If tomorrow wasn't such a long time
Then lonesome would mean nothing to you at all

Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin'
If I could hear her heart a softly poundin'
Only if she was lyin' by me
Then I'd lie in my bed once again

I can't see my reflection in the water
I can't speak the sounds that show no pain
I can't hear the echo of my footsteps
Or can't remember the sounds of my own name

Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin'
And if I could hear her heart a softly poundin' Yes if only if she was lyin' by me
Then I'd lie in my bed once again

There's beauty in the silver, singin' river There's beauty in the sunrise in the sky
But none of these and nothin' else can touch the beauty
That I remember in my true loves eyes

Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin'
I could hear her heart a softly poundin'
Yes if only if she was lyin' by me
And I'd lie in my bed once again

Concrete Blonde- Why Don't You See Me
From late in the song:
Are you in love?
Are you in pain?
Are they together and the same?
Where do you go?
Who do you know?
Are you that lonely ghost of your soul?
Why don't you see me?

Concrete Blonde - Days and Days is pretty good too (kinda spoken word set to music)
The dirty leaves are sailing
on a hot wind ocean
and the summer comes
and the summer goes and always has & will
and something somewhere
that you said goes ricochet
all through my head
and flashing like a neon sign
the time stand still

Chorus:
Hours are forever,
coming all together
at the crossroads of a minute.
And you and me were in it
and I never saw it coming.
never saw it fade away
today, today, today....Days and Days

And still the whining of the wheels
sounds closest to the way I fell and
winter comes, and winter goes.
And always has & will
another hour, another day,
another year you pissed away
remember walking in the Rain?
I'm walking there still.
(Chorus)
Like every heart to the beat before
and every wave to kiss a shore
I'm not the first, I'm not the last...
And soon to be your past
but every morning, when the light
comes creeping in around my eyes
another future falls behind
the one I had in mind

Rage lyrics always get me going... Not so much because of the anti government thing, but because it reminds me of a time when I was young and jamming this shite and not giving a frick about anything. Rage made me think for myself and question authority

"They load the clip in omnicolour
Said they pack the 9, they fire it at prime time
Sleeping gas, every home was like Alcatraz
And mutha frickas lost their minds

No escape from the mass mind rape
Play it again jack and then rewind the tape
And then play it again and again and again
Until ya mind is locked in
Believin' all the lies that they're tellin' ya
Buyin' all the products that they're sellin' ya
They say jump and ya say how high
Ya brain-dead
Ya gotta frickin' bullet in ya head

Just victims of the in-house drive-by
They say jump, you say how high"

i had never heard it until she mentioned it. that really hit me like a ton of bricks because it was years after we split that she told me.

I guess I'll lose my mind waitin' in this purgatory line.
If Jesus walked on water then where'd he get them shoes?
It just keeps gettin' harder to lose these walkin' blues.
dbt, purgatory line

Sure, why not.

John Lennon - God

God is a Concept by which
we measure our pain
I'll say it again
God is a Concept by which
we measure our pain
I don't believe in magic
I don't believe in I-ching
I don't believe in Bible
I don't believe in Tarot
I don't believe in Hitler
I don't believe in Jesus
I don't believe in Kennedy
I don't believe in Buddha
I don't believe in Mantra
I don't believe in Gita
I don't believe in Yoga
I don't believe in Kings
I don't believe in Elvis
I don't believe in Zimmerman
I don't believe in Beatles
I just believe in me...and that reality

The dream is over
What can I say?
the Dream is Over
Yesterday
I was the Dreamweaver
But now I'm reborn
I was the Walrus
But now I'm John
and so dear friends
you'll just have to carry on
The Dream is over

Jimmy Webb - Wichita Lineman

I am a lineman for the county and I drive the main road
Searchin' in the sun for another overload
I hear you singin' in the wire, I can hear you through the whine
And the Wichita Lineman is still on the line

I know I need a small vacation but it don't look like rain
And if it snows that stretch down south won't ever stand the strain
And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time
And the Wichita Lineman is still on the line

Jackson Browne - Late For The Sky

The words had all been spoken
And somehow the feeling still wasn't right
And still we continued on through the night
Tracing our steps from the beginning
Until they vanished into the air
Trying to understand how our lives has led us there

Looking hard into your eyes
There was nobody I'd ever known
Such an empty surprise to feel so alone

Now for me some words come easy
But I know that they don't mean that much
Compared with the things that are said when lovers touch
You never knew what I loved in you
I don't know what you loved in me
Maybe the picture of somebody you were hoping I might be

Awake again I can't pretend and I know I'm alone
And close to the end of the feeling we've known

How long have I been sleeping
How long have I been drifting alone through the night
How long have I been dreaming I could make it right
If I closed my eyes and tried with all my might
To be the one you need

Awake again I can't pretend and I know I'm alone
And close to the end of the feeling we've known

How long have I been sleeping
How long have I been drifting alone through the night
How long have I been running for that morning flight
Through the whispered promises and the changing light
Of the bed where we both lie
Late for the sky

"You built your tower strong and tall
Can't you see, it's got to fall someday"

Tower Song - Townes Van Zandt

Hard not to think of 9/11 though the song is from well before that and a different topic.

I've always liked the lyrics to this Townes song; you have to pay attention because he enjoys throwing in sarcasm. Starting from the first line; the wind always blows in Amarillo and the moon pretty much always rises over the Gunnison. What he is actually saying is that hell will freeze over before he lies beneath the laughter of his girfriend's eyes so he is hitting the road. The last two lines take a little work too but aren't too hard to figure out.

Snowing on Raton
When the wind don’t blow in Amarillo
And the moon along the Gunnison don’t rise
Shall I cast my dreams upon your love, babe
And lie beneath the laughter of your eyes

It’s snowin’ on Raton
Come morning I’ll be through them hills and gone

Mother thinks the road is long and lonely
Little brother thinks the road is straight and fine
Little darling thinks the road is soft and lovely
I’m thankful that old road is a friend of mine

Bid the years good-bye you cannot still them
You cannot turn the circles of the sun
You cannot count the miles until you feel them
And you cannot hold a lover that is gone

Tomorrow the mountains will be sleeping
Silently the blanket green and blue
But I shall hear the silence they are keeping
I’ll bring all their promises to you

Another song that takes a little puzzling out is Happy Jack by the Who. Especially the line "so they rode on his head in their furry donkey". That is a huge clue, though, donkey rides are popular at British island resorts. My take is that this song is Pete Townsend firing a shot at the phrase "no man is an island" since this takes place on the Isle of Man and I think Happy Jack literally is the island ("They dropped things on his back").

Happy Jack
Happy Jack wasn't old, but he was a man.
He lived in the sand at the Isle of Man.
The kids would all sing, he would take the wrong key,
So they rode on his head in their furry donkey.

The kids couldn't hurt Jack,
They tried, tried, tried.
They dropped things on his back,
They lied, lied, lied, lied, lied.

But they couldn't stop Jack, 'or the waters lapping,
And they couldn't prevent Jack from being happy.

But they couldn't stop Jack, 'or the waters lapping,
And they couldn't prevent Jack from being happy.

The kids couldn't hurt Jack,
They tried, tried, tried.
They dropped things on his back
They lied, lied, lied, lied, lied.

But they couldn't stop Jack, 'or the waters lapping.
And they couldn't prevent Jack from being happy.

I don't even hear words usually. When I go to shows with friends, I find myself going, "oh so that's what they are saying." I don't even have an answer for you. I think i have a problem.

If I could have one wish right now
I'd be about as half as tough as I pretend I am
cooley, space city

You can throw me in the Colbert County jailhouse.
You can throw me off the Wilson Dam
but there ain't much difference in the man I wanna be and the man I really am.
isbell, never gonna change

Bastard from the start but a charming one at that
Bad reputation but I really ain't that bad
It's alright, I can't feel a thing
lucero, can't feel a thing

'cause there's something 'bout just laying down and taking all that pain
I'd rather drive all night, if it's all the same '
cause half a tank of gas will get me far enough To be completely lost by the time the sun comes up
lucero, it gets the worst at night

The weight of guilt and a tired soul
Too great a weight to carry on your own
If you can't bear no crosses you can't wear no crown
lucero, weight of guilt

They say it takes hardship, boy
To let you love the rest
Sometimes underneath the load
Is where I show my best
Go, put your work clothes on
Go and leave your mark

I can see too many mouths open,
too many eyes closed, ears closed
Not enough minds open,
too many legs open
Tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, do
Why isn't it why, why
I don't see wise in why, why
