... hurts our offense in our first big games? I think this was in dispute in previous seasons since there were so many other reasons / excuses for our poor offense, but I think this year it really showed. Even now our offense is probably not as good as it could be, but you can see the progress when we started opening things up.

On a related note, getting the backups some more playing time by attacking the easier opponents may help. I still get ticked when I think of how little playing time our backup QB has gotten all season. It has nearly burned us with the hits that Mett has taken.

I lol'd at your presumption that we *took it easy* on anyone! We were trying to blow them out. We couldn't!
The offensive struggles are not a myth. We need better coaching on offense. Whether it's a new OC or a different planner/playcaller, it needs to happen
LSU is now known as a perennial offensive underachieving team by the entire nation. Our losses are directly attributed to HORRIBLE playcalling at crunch time!

There was no reason not to have played Mett more LAST year. We had plenty of opportunities.

i agree that part of what made LSU so dominant last year was that they had to prepare immediately for excellence in an opponent with Oregon. Our offense wasn't perfect in that game, but it was gritty and well-thought-out.

Not sure what to think of this TCU gig next year. It is certainly a big upgrade from North Texas, but I hope the LSU players and staff take it with the same urgency they took Oregon. In many ways, it's a no-win situation for LSU.

I agree. TCU was tough for a lot of good teams this year. They are way too easy to overlook.

Playing a cupcake doesn't affect the quality of our offense, they're just warmup games for the most part. The danger of course is that we lose key players to injuries in these games, depriving the team of their services for the games that count.

On a side note, I don't include the cupcakes into our record or team stats—after all, who cares that we beat Bumfrick St. 63-0 and put up 600 yards of offense? The win and stats are meaningless to me. So for me, the 2013 Tigers finished 7-2 with one win over a non-conference BCS school (Washington). I think this is a more accurate way to assess the team's performance.

This is dumb when people say this. Mettenberger was the third string QB last year. How many third string QBs see significant playing time during the year. And you expect him to have come in and thrown passes?? What when we were beating UF and Auburn by 30 you want to bring in Mett to throw some passes? Stupid.

Earnest preparation absolutely *does* affect the quality of our offense, and defense. And that was the case in 2011 when conditioning to stop Oregon's spread started in the spring and carried through the summer.

LSU's coaching staff acknowledged this several times last year.

Going into a season with a month of cupcakes up front most assuredly gives offenses an opportunity to lack urgency in August preparation.
