As an alum I can assure you that OCS does no active recruiting. Are there kids who live out of district who go there? Yes. However it is for the environment of the school and its academics, not athletics. Their entire families go there and not all are athletes. 95% come to OCS prior to high school.

It's a fine line thing. Are they coming because they are "recruited" or are they coming because the public schools they are leaving have gone to poop?

When I was a kid, all the local high school baseball programs were coached by assistant football coaches, who half-assed baseball season as something to do until spring football started.

Then the local private school hired a real baseball coach who put together a good schedule and organized it like a real coach would. Next thing you know, that school had the best players in town and, of course, they were accused of recruiting them.

Did they recruit them or did the public schools F-up by not doing the sport justice? A few years later, one of the big public schools also hired a good coach and in a heartbeat they were getting the best players.

Wow, there's plenty of hot air in this thread. I went to OCS for 1 year 89-90 and I can tell you OCS started the whole hold back thing but west monroe perfected it. There was a leadership change at OCS after I left and by the time my kid got there in pre-k 3, things had changed dramatically. Education is 1st there is NO questioning that. You can say what you want but that is how it really is. OCS has had 1, (let repeat for you slow readers) 1 D1 football player in this century and that was Zach Tarver last year and he's at ULL. Now if OCS is the next Evangel they sure suck at promoting their "recruits". No the difference is these kids start together, play together from flag I until they graduate. Now sure you'll have 1 or 2 come in during jr high but, for the most part they have all been there since elementary. I coached my kids age group from flag I until they went into 7th grade last year. That group won 2 YMCA Super Bowls and lost another. 2 of those years they only allowed points in the Super Bowl, went un-scored upon all season. This is against Neville, Carroll, wossman, ouachita, and Sterlington kids.

Here's why. We teach our kids the same system that they run at the varsity level starting in Flag I. We take certain plays and add to them every year. My sons group in Tackle II could run a total of 65 plays out of the play book meaning the Varsity play book. Mind you we ran the same play out of 5 or 6 different formations. We taught them the 4-4 defense and how to attack the running game. Once hey get to 7th grade they already know the terminalogy that the coaches are using. We only send plays in with signals from the side line so they know how to read that before they get into jr high. Once they get there they add to what we taught them and then teach hem the defense that the varsity runs as well as add to the 4-4 that we taught them. Add all that together with educated kids that completely buy into the system with great fan and family support and you get the product that OCS has put on the field.

I didn't hold my kid back because his bday is in Oct but, some others did. You know they could tell that they were 5* at 5 years old.....

Seriously some of you guys kill me. You've apparently never stepped foot on the campus and are going by what some knuckle head "heard" or a pissed off fan of another team that got skull drug by the Eagles and their feelings got hurt said. If here's one school hat does it the right way, it's OCS and you can bank on that.

I believe he was talking about Tommy Banks. Those boys went to OCS until Shows showed up at WM and needed a TD machine.

Yet Shows accuses us of recruiting all his players. Well Donald.... They were ours first...

I was in high school in the '70's and it was always said Oak Grove started the holdback system for players - true or not, no telling.

I think the name of the school and reputation recruits for the team. if you had a 5* son you'd probably move to a district with a 5* team.

Willis left OCS because his little brother wanted to go to a more diverse school. Played with him and used to ride with him to workouts.

Yeah i know why he left...i was just saying ocs holds back more than recruits...cant think of anyone they recruited in a while..also they will never be at the level of evangel or jc...after probably next year their talent level will drop a good bit...they have just had a good run last few years

And when Banks left for West Monroe he wasn't even playing football. Didn't go out until after the season had started. Not the best job of recruiting there by Shows.

Undefeated football season 7th through varsity last year, JV hasn't lost a game in 5 years, 8th grade group has lost 2 games in the last 4 years and only 1 of those in jr high says different..

The next two years OCS will be at least a quarter final team. The two years after that they will be headed south to the big house unless something big changes in the landscape of 1A.

What all you guys don't get is OCS doesn't win with talent. They win with coaching and disciplined play. They aren't your typical Louisiana Private School.

evangel and John Curtis don't have superior talent then huh?

I went to ocs for 15 years and what farmtiger says is accurate besides Mark laird was also a d1 recruit who got held back and is playing baseball instead of football in college. I graduated less than 5 years ago and there was only one hold back in my grade and he played soccer

Are you kidding? Curtis has a more sophisticated redshirt program than any college team has.

I can see for mies....I know about a dozen kids at Curtis..... The same % as from your school are in their proper grade....

And the 15% number from that ore school is way off....

I have refereed at least 18 Curtis games....and in most years NO

This year.....yes...must years they win with discipline and execution...

You are correct, Curtis doesn't always have superior talent but they play disciplined football and won't beat themselves. This year they are just loaded with superior talent but it's not that way most years.
