However, that wouldn't have happened had you used a superior deer hunting rifle like an AR-15.

Springfield XD40 is in my hip most of the time. Mainly for hogs or if I jump a deer. But I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people that walk in the woods at dark without a loaded gun for safety reasons. What you scared of? Black panther?

This^. I always have a handgun on me when I'm in the woods. You can draw quicker, get on target quicker, fire more than one shot quicker, and use only one hand if a squatch is on top of you and you're trying to fight him off.
I usually have 4 rounds in the magazine of my 700 but don't chamber one until I'm in the box. I'm sure this is the same for most people.
