I hate that the government is defining how a marriage should be defined. Why do the Churches continue to fight this issue ? Why not work to try and eliminate marriage from the governments language and call everything a civil union?
I've been saying this!

You are getting off the point of this thread.
Not trying to get off point at all. I thought I was taking it to its natural conclusion. The only (only) reason is to establish a common framework that benefits society. My apologies for the (seemingly) inadvertent hijack. Carry on.

Whats the point? Some religions already recognize gay marriage as marriage. Changing a word used by the government won't get rid of it. It is what it is, gay marriage will become standard, people need to get over it already.

Wrong, the church's can fight among themselves on what "is" marriage. The rest of us can push this stupid issue off the table politically.

There wouldn't be a fight among the religions because they can't tell each other shite. The muslims can't really tell the christians what to believe, hell even the different denominations of christians can't tell the others what to do. The Episcopal church has pretty much said gay marriage is ok with them already. It would be nice to get rid of it politically, but the fundies would go ape shite if you tried to eliminate marriage altogether from government.

This is the exact point. If the GOVERNMENT recognizes and classifies people by "marital" status is should be applied to all. Gay people are afforded equal treatment by the constitution. If the Government did not recognize marriage, then churches could marry their own as they see fit from religion to religion. The churches would have the right to refuse marriages because of their protections in the Constitution. This all makes too much sense though. And the far right have a hard on to impose their beliefs and legislate in ur bedroom.

If everybody was recognized under Civil Union by the government we wouldn't have the problem. The term "marriage" is the problem.

So "they" are not people, correct? Just an adjective? Debate the merits, not the personalities.
