Good but there are plenty better. I'd take my Native with a better steel and ergonomics but I prefer Benchmade's AXIS locks and knives that use similar setups for EDC use.

Anything with a thumb stud in it is WRONG.

I'm sticking with the benchmade till it falls apart. So far no complaints. Perfect size and excellent steel.

The clip and the handle material on most of my knives do more damage than the thumb studs. The SOG Pentagon I and the Benchmade 940 don't even need the thumbstud to open one-handed.

Can't speak to much other than the Spyderco Endura these days. My days of cutting up pants with thumb studs were over many, many years ago.
I want a knife that hangs CORRECTLY in my pocket which means I don't have to flip it around to open it. It comes out my pocket in the right angle.
I want a knife that I can't miss the opening with a subconcscious swipe across it. It needs to be without any thought.
I want a knife that is not going to move in my grip no matter what I've steeped it in. From blood and guts to oil and grease. That spyderco you have there... what is that? It's not the one I'm talking about at all. I can tell by the lack of holes for the clip on each end and the lack of scalloped, directional 'checkering' on the handle.
I want a knife that's going to take abuse. The reason I started buying Spyderco was because my brother got out of BUDS and gave me one he used to cut a piece of plywood up in order to make a large explosive. It originally was serrated but by the time I got it they were ground off and it was mostly straight edge that had been retouched till serrations were gone. I still have that one as well as a few more.
Spyderco has improved on the endura since they made it. The VG10 steel is just really something I can't explain. It's the only knife I've had a steel like that in. You don't have to sharpen it much at all and that's mostly just touching up the edge because it's so hard. Meat and bone don't faze it. Boxes don't faze it. You go through whatever you want to cut up then touch up with a crock stick and it's shaving sharp once again. It's the most amazing steel I've ever personally had any experience with. I've owned all generations of Spyderco.
Thumb knobs are a pet peeve of mine. That's trying to fix a problem that's solved by correct geometry, not adding a bar too it.
I'm a Spyderco fanboi and have been for a very long time.

I like your enthusiasm also. I may have to check this knife out now. I like my benchmande, don't wear tight pants, and don't have any issues with serrations....but you sold me on my next purchase.

lol the plywood was to mount it on. They had to make an explosive and sink a target so they put it under a ship, created a bubble with it, broke the back of the ship.

Can't argue with that. I count that a plus. And I don't try to use them as a prybar so can't really tell you much about that either.
And like I said, I've never used one better than the VG10 but I'd love to see it. I have no doubt they'll top it if they haven't already. And apparently they have. Seems to be the nature of the beast.

IMHO, S30V is one of the best for pocket knives. Runs directly on the edge of hardness and being able to be sharpened. VG10 was too soft for my tastes. I like to use a knife for what I want to use it for and not worry about screwing it up. I don't baby things
There are so many different types of knife-specific steels, it would make your head explode. I was bored a few years ago and sat down and read about probably 200 that were in use at the time. Everything from tool steel, axes, pocket knives, kitchen knives, to skinning knives. They all have probably 75 different types of steel.

If VG-10 is soft I'd be scared to death of trying to sharpen something you consider hard.

Haha, I've got a Lansky full kit for really messed up knives, but the Spyderco Sharpmaker I have works really well and is quick
I had a Zero Tolerance S30V knife that I couldn't sharpen at all. Sent it back to the factory to get sharpened. This Spyderco doesn't get messed up or nicked, just not as sharp as I want it after a while. For some reason the Sharpmaker works really well on it. It probably has something to do with the different angles the blades were cut

Cant beat a case trapper. I dont know how pld your son is ,but kids lose knives . So as someone else said "better buy two".

My advice is make sure he wants/needs a knife first. When I was in the Navy I used my Leatherman exponentially more than my pocket knife.
