Dred Scott vs Standford 1857 basically made the Missouri Compromise Illegal. Again, another threat to the North.
I was referring to the fact that pro-slavery men came across the Kansas border to rig the vote on whether to be a free or slave state. That happened and Kansas erupted in violence because of it. But yeah, certainly Dred Scott was the precursor to that.

It's a difficult topic because there is so much bias and misunderstanding on both sides. The most important point is for us all to understand the "Why". 1. Why did the South leave the United States? 2. Why did the North feel compelled to bring them back into the Union? It was all about money and control. It's that simple. You can throw slavery or whatever tidbit into the debate but that's the underlying reason for the Civil War.

I should know better, but I'm continually surprised by the infatuation with the glories of the Old South, revisionist history regarding the role of slavery in the conflict and the hysterical demonization of Lincoln by a lot of posters here. It's kind of spooky. At any rate, of the Civil War and Lincoln's presidency are more complex than a single issue. The North was entirely composed saintly morally righteous reformers, and Lincoln, like all presidents, was a flawed man. But Jesus H. Christ, slavery and the unlawful attempt to secede and break apart the Union pretty much captures the essence of the time.

So V...the 'consent of the governed', isn't that important in governance? Simply who wins and governs at 'the barell of a gun'? Yall over-simplify things looking back in retrospect. I would imagine that a lot of Southerners who didn't own slaves, were aghast at the thought of turning them lose in their community and therefore chose to fight against the North's imposition, as a matter of their personal safety. Kinda like Katrina dumping the projects in our back yard; a lot of them dudes have serious psychological chips-on-the-shoulder regarding whitey; throw in desperation...ya got a real security problem. Rev. Wright - Barack's spiritual mentor - sure as hell does. And a lot of us believe that Barack "if I had a son he'd look like Travon" Obama...does too. You don't have to be a slavery sympathizing racist, to choose avenues of action that take racial dynamics into personal safety account. Like I'm sure both you and the Rev. Jerimiah Wright do. He lives in a gated community, I think. He might be racist...but he aint a fool.

Could not agree more. A myriad of issues over a thirty to forty year period led us to the Civil War. And many decisions that were made appear flawed in the light of today. Bottom line, nothing is as simple as we would have it to be.

Kudos for the McPherson reference. I'm a huge fan of his work. It's not easy to present such nuance in an easily digestible form, but he finds a way. Wondering what your thoughts are on some of his other works ("For Cause and Comrades" "Tried by War," etc.)?

uh, so slavery was legal in a multitude of countries. Yet we were the only country that required a civil war to end it? Why is that? :jeopardymusicplays: Sorry, but ending the scourge of slavery in the US was the excuse, not the reason for the war
