Yes, I know some bartenders and waiters who make a nice living.

He's not being prejudiced. It's literally not well known to tip in some cultures. Tipping is not customary in other countries.

Then you should move to Europe where that assumption is largely valid.

Not try to impose your opinions on continental cultural mores.

You only need to tip $1 for drinks? Damn, I always tipped 3 plus (mainly to not look cheap in front of dates but still).

re: Watch out for waitresses adding auto gratuity if you've been drinking...

The general entitlement of the service industry is why I do not go out to eat often

I don't ask for much. I don't care about the specials. I'm not asking for special alterations to my order. I don't care about wine pairings. Take my order, keep my water glass full, and be prompt with the check.

I charge by the time I am at the place. Im at $8/hr. Amount I spend does not matter. If I am ordering drinks, I will add about $1 per drink to my gratuity.

Why would I tip more than that for someone to open a beer or pour whiskey in a glass? I'm not asking them to actually mix anything. If I was, I would tip more. But when all I'm asking for is a beer or a whiskey on the rocks, I'm not going to tip that much.

When they took the job, they knew they were taking the risk of not having a guaranteed income. When I got into sales after college where I was commission, I knew the risk as well. To me, the price of the food includes making it and bringing it to me. Do I tip? Sure, when I feel the service was worth it. Do I feel obligated to do it? frick no. If the server doesn't like it, then tough shite.

This statement right there is why places use autograt. Tipping at a restaurant is Not Optional. It is expected and in some cases required. I'm not saying anyone deserves to be hosed by the waitstaff for 40% under any cirmcumstances, but tipping is not something that is done when you feel the service was "worth it". At a restaurant in which you are served food it is required. How much you want to give, assuming that's 15% or better, is up to you.

The frick it is. It is expected, not required. That's half the problem, waitstaffs figure they can do a shite job and still be owed a tip.

Paying the bill is required, tipping is not. You should tip however.

Of course some places list required tipping for large parties or other various reasons.

That'd be cool, but how do you know who these non-tipping people are beforehand?

They look like this.

I judge people by the way they treat waiters/waitresses and other service people.

I do too. I once asked a friend wtf was his problem with servers because he was such a dick to them. He said he didn't realize he was- I don't see how. He was a gigantic ahole to any server we had. It got to a point where we hated going out to eat with him and his wife (who was a former server).

And, why is it so difficult to be nice to people in general? It's the weirdest thing when people's personality changes and they're dicks to servers.

just fwiw Scots and Brits are total aholes to wait staff.

Why is she entitled to automatically add what HER OPINION is her earned tip on my check? There is no logical reason for her to AUTOMATIALLY add 40% ever. The tip is up to me unless I am with a large group (I have no problem with auto grat on large groups). She lost her tip by trying to sneak it in the bill, and not even acknowledging it when her manager made her bring us a new check. I have not once in my life had a waiter auto grat themselves on nights where there is a special. And I've been to the loft plenty times and none of the other waitresses there have done that on Friday nights. That tells me what she did was wrong.

This is just not true. If a waiter or waitress is so awful that I think the deserve no tip, you can be damn sure I'm not giving them one. It's happened exactly twice in my life, this past Friday included, and both times I've alerts the manager to let them know why. I used to work tips as well, and you must certainly are not automatically entitled to it.

I really don't have a problem in Houma but in S'Port I used to get "I'm a good tipper and would have tipped more". I always say if that is so then put the extra that you would have tipped on top of the grat. They never do. All that person did was reinforce the idea that gratuity needs to be added.

Haha, yall want it all huh? I rarely tip less than 20%, and I also rarely add tip above the auto-grat. If it's 18%, waiter gets what was expected and I save a few dollars. It's called risk reward, not reward reward.

Europe is awesome. Tips at a restaurant are 10-12%, no tip if you go to the bar, and no tipping on things like haircuts. We tipped 15% everywhere we ate and they seemed pleased. Auto-grat was never higher than 12.5%.

I don't understand how this thread has gone on for so long. The waitress was a dumb twat who was trying to basically steal money. How anyone could possibly think her adding a 40% auto grat is ok blows my mind.

I tip plenty generous, and when they add it, it's like an insult

Do you tip them ahead of time? Do you wear a big pin that says, "I TIP BIG"?

Fact.

I'm glad you posted this. I don't check the bill very carefully, usually.

I always tip well, unless the service is really horrible.
