I think the caption says it all...
Saints Move Up 6 Spots to #16
quote:
Right when you write off the New Orleans Saints, they smack you upside the head. Beating the 8-0 Falcons on the strength of the defense is shocking. Did some folks predict a Saints upset in the Superdome? Sure. But most thought Drew Brees would have to bludgeon the Falcons' secondary for that to happen. That didn't really happen, although Brees had a good game. The two big sequences were a goal-line stand by Steve Spagnuolo's defense and a scintillating 56-yard touchdown run by Chris Ivory. New Orleans won three weeks ago with a big goal-line stop in Tampa Bay. Timely defense is often as effective as dominant defense.

Although that means absolutely nothing, nice to see

I've noticed that a lot recently. When the pressure is on and our defense needs a stop. They do it. They get pumped. If they could play that way the entire game well damn. Maybe it's a good sign though that this defense will come around by the end of the season and if we make the playoffs we'd be the team everyone would be threatened by. Or at least we'll be something next season.

It's almost the exact opposite of the defense the past 2 years. The defense would always collapse in clutch situations, now the reverse is happening, it'll give up plays - but when the game is on the line, or their backs are against the wall, they seem to respond very well.
Never give up on the Saints...

Didn't someone point out that Spag defenses start out a little slow then get better as the year goes on? Even when we sucked, I liked the playcalling. Maybe the guys are starting to come around.

I've been telling friends this all week and getting laughed at.
It's true, the D won that game.
After the 10-0 lead in the first 5 minutes (which would have been 14-0 if not for the D holding them to a FG after Brees' awful pick), the D held ATL to 7 points for the next FORTY minutes.
That is phenomenal against a bad matchup for us.
The O should have had that game out of reach, but only put up 3 points in the last TWENTY minutes of the game.
This team isn't built to allow our O to go to sleep like that in games.
We need to come out fast, and not let up when we get a lead.
The D got big stop after big stop and the O didn't build on the lead.
We're coming together and finding ways to win AS A TEAM.
Tired of the D getting blasted while no one points out the good they do and the times the O doesn't capitalize on their stops.
We've only scored over 30 three times and only hit 35 ONCE after averaging 34 last year.
Both sides of the ball have struggled but we're improving steadily since week 3.
Love the stability with Vitt now too. I think teams on our schedule are in serious trouble.

There is no doubt in my kind there has been improvement every single week and that's all you can ask for. This last week was probably the first time we had everyone healthy and available on defense. If that can continue, the ceiling continues to rise.

I've had the same response. Two weeks ago after the Philly game, I made comments to some friends about how good the defense looked and I got called a dumbass, etc. Then I made the same comments during the Atlanta game and they still shot me down. Each time, they kept bringing up the total yards they gave up. Judging a defense by the number of yards they give up is just dumb. If they give up a ton of yards, but hold them in the red zone, I'll take that every week!

I really don't see how this guy ranks the Cowboys ahead of us
not a huge deal though

What's more disturbing is that the teams ranked 25, 27 & 31 beat us

The defense has really played well more than at opportune times. The just have some defensive breakdowns at bad times. Seems like Atlanta got a ton of their yards on 3 or 4 broken plays where their receiver was left wide open.

The one thing I've been preaching on here for awhile. In the modern NFL you aren't going to field more than maybe a handful of dominant defenses. Even less likely on a team that's built to score like we are with a marquee passing game. Give me timely play any day of the week.

Yup.
Only 4 teams in the entire NFL give up less than 19 points a game.
The 5th through 25th teams all give up between 19 and 25 a game.
The Saints are giving up 25.4 since week 2 and only gave up over 28 ONCE since then, against Denver. And that is against five of the top ten scoring offenses in the league. The D is doing it's part.
Our O should definitely be able to win games like that.
If we can knock that number down by just a FG to 22 a game, I don't think anyone on our schedule can beat us.

New thread topic.
If we miss the playoffs, will the Saints end the season top 10 or better in the power rankings rated ahead of several playoff teams?

They've won four of five to get back in the playoff race. Can they come back from the 0-4 start? You bet they can.
Well, that was by far the nicest thing I've ever read from Prisco about the Saints.
