Because the 2 is the budget model. Apple can drop the price and still make money. The 3 and 4 are pretty close in terms of specs so the 3 was dropped but you can still get refurbished iPad 3's.

I can see why you are confused. Apple typically sells the new iPad or iPhone and keeps sells the previous generation one for $100 less. But in the case of the iPad 4, they are continuing to sell the iPad 2 and not the iPad 3 for a few reasons: 1. The screen on the iPad 3 is retina. I don't think Apple has built in enough margins in terms of volume to sell a retina iPad 3 for $399 and still make a fat profit. 2. Many people though the iPad 3 didn't have the right internals to drive its retina display. The new A6X processor in the iPad 4 fixes that and runs the retina display on the 4 very smoothly. 3. Apple kind of wanted to streamline their new lightning connector across their product lines. They wanted all iOS devices to have the newer connector before the holiday season sales. Hence the iPad 4. It was a logical successor to the iPhone 5 and a good midcycle upgrade to the iPad 3.

I like the mini better. It's easier to hold in my opinion.

Thanks guys for the detailed explanation. For a non tech savvy guy like me. Can any of you tell me the main differences between the 3 and 4 and if its worth spending a little less on the 3 or just getting the 4? It's for my girl friend.

They upgraded the processor and the camera I believe.. Cant recall if there is anything else. Dont think you can buy the 3 anymore that isnt refurbished. Maybe someone has an old stock of it too but not sure they are any cheaper.

I'll probably just go with the newest one then. The mini sounds very unimpressive to me.

Think there will be any Black Friday sale on it or just go ahead and buy it and get it over with? Now I have to decide white or the black one. #firstworldproblems

You are welcome. Honestly, in day to day use, you will be hard pressed to see any difference in speeds between the iPad 3 and the 4. Check out speed test videos on youtube. You can't tell which is which. Having said that, consider these things before making your decision: 1. Money: the iPad 3 refurbished is $379 (if you can find it in stock) and the iPad 4 is $499. You know how much you can spend. 2. The iPad 4 will definitely be supported longer than the iPad 3 in terms of future iOS support. 3. The iPad 4 may run certain games and videos a little more smoothly than the 3. Also the iPad 4 will probably have slightly better battery life. This is because the 4 uses a more powerful and more efficient newer generation processor compared to the 3 (32 nm vs 45 nm - basically it is smaller, faster and sips less power).

Now that.. You might want to check into. Look at Blackfriday.com. The price of the iPad will still be the exact same but there are some places that will give you a gift card on top of it for buying one on Black Friday.

I like the size of the mini. Not a big fan of the aspect ratio that the ipad has at 10.1 inches

I think the most enticing part of buying the newer one is that it will be supported longer. I'm sure my girl friend would like either one because she wouldn't know the difference. I just want to get the most out of the purchase. I will probably end up playing around with it more.

The iPads all have the same aspect ratio, 4:3, and the big iPad has a 9.7" screen, Mini, 7.9". I think 4:3 makes a great deal of sense for small devices that run programs full screen. It especially makes sense when rotating web pages and other documents to landscape, because you see more vertically.

I have an iPad 2, but want to upgrade to an iPad w LTE. Is the mini's specs really an upgrade over the 2? I think the cameras are better which was the worst thing about the 2 IMo. Is the screen and processor any different over the 2?
