I can think of a few before him that fit that sentence better. AIH and TK come to mind.

ETA: It makes perfect sense actually. You know you are guilty, but you deflect blame by confusing the issue and convincing the people who are judging you to focus their attention on something else, thus saving face and getting off scott free for something you should be condemned for.
