This is by far the most ignorant part of any of these posts. If you think there is any way in hell Louisiana secedes and the United States allows it to take the oil rights, you are both stupid and beyond reproach.

Hence the reason I said there would be obvious difficulties, but that scenario has played out around the world with differing degrees of success. For any scenario to work, the new government would need a plan in place to replace existing benefits and a buy back plan for all (now) foreign currency.

Could it happen now? Very unlikely, but there could (and I believe it will) come a time when the federal government is too weak to stop it.

You underestimate the power of the people. WE give the power to officials, WE can take it back. Louisiana will be a new country all to itself, therefore all rights prescibed by International Law precedes all else. We have started a movement now.....more states will join.

I Agree, I don't know why I get sucked into these convos, no reasoning with these people. This thread is an embarrassment to this site too.

I think most people have no idea what they are talking about when referring to offshore oil. In Louisiana, anything outside of 3 miles is FEDERAL waters.

If Louisiana could keep their own oil and gas royalties, we'd be much better off

Only because the feds gave us a bum deal. Only an idiot (ie a federal regulator or a politician) would think oil drilled 4 miles out has no impact on Louisiana's environment and infrastructure. But instead of putting that money toward offsetting that wear and tear, the feds throw it into their slush fund for projects like I-99 and the Big Dig.

Every state receives more than what they pay, that's why we are $16,000,000,000,000 in debt.

While it may be something that makes people feel like they are doing something, it is a waste of time. There are only two paths out of the Union, (1) revolution, which didn't work once before, or (2) consent of the states. See Texas v. White (1869). Don't see that happening.
