How often does government simply increase taxes without already having the hopeful increased revenue earmarked for something that spends the new revenue? There's a reason this people never want to decrease spending first. They've already spent the potential increase in taxes they want.
They need to prove they even have the capacity to cut spending before we give them more money. And it will never happen. Never ever.

if cutting taxes led to an economic boom then the economy would be booming right now and would have been terrible during the Clinton years. Cutting taxes helps the economy the same way increasing spending does but can't be maintained.

How so? Tax increases are proposed to pay for increased spending. Obama has no intention of increasing revenues to pay for what we already spend.
This theory of needing to increase taxes to help the deficit is so flawed, it's laughable.

Growth is the long term answer.
Our problem is we've been doing it wrong. Good economy? Let's spend more and cut taxes. Bad economy? Clearly we spend less and raise taxes. We've got ourselves in quite a pickle now.
Slashing spending and raising taxes still leaves us with more debt, thus not helping to fix our problem and adding to the suffering of people. Awesome!

I don't have a problem with the measures that would be taken, but if they were to occur because the parties couldn't get a deal done it would affect the economy at a bad time.
