RIP.
I was surpirsed how young he was when he retired. He was not that much older than Bowden or Paterno. Any orangeblood types know why he hung it up so early?

Royal's daughter was killed in a bus accident in 1973. This incident caused him to reassess where he was in life and he admittedly was less aggressive as a coach at a time when college recruiting was becoming more aggressive. By 1976, he knew it was time to move on with life. Essentially, he decided to "stop and smell the roses" as it were. He lost a son in a motorcycle accident in the 1980's.
