I am looking to purchase my first gun. I plan to hunt ducks, doves, and squirrel. I hope to add turkey to that list. I have a few questions on what gun to get and what to look for in a used gun.

I am thinking either a Remington 870 or a Benelli Nova both 12 gauge.

Either would be a great 1st gun.

ETA:

As to what to look for, you will just need to look and see how worn the gun is. You don't want one that has any type of surface rust, make sure the action isn't sloppy.

I have to agree. You can't go wrong with either one. Just go pick them both up in your hands and see which one feels better to you.

Either one would be great. I'm an 870 fan because that's what I grew up with.

IMO the order of goodness goes

870 wingmaster>nova>870 express.

Both are the cream of the crop as far as pump shotguns used for hunting go. I will say, the Nova beats the shite out of your shoulder.

I would go with the Nova they shoot great and shoulder really well. Benelli is by far the best shotgun IMO.

Nova was my first purchase and I've loved it.

870 ain't bad either though.

Go handle a nova and see which feels best to you.
