Dozens of yakers and canoers do the whole river every year. Must not be that dangerous.
Don't think I would want to mess with the barges.

I fish some bar pits in baton rouge that cut into the river.

Why would it be considered so dangerous?

Current, under tow, logs and other debris, barges, etc.
The Ole Man is dangerous as hell.

Current, whirlpools, barges and whatnot. That and not a single one of them had any sort of outboard strapped to their yaks.

I've seen whole fricking tress shoot up out the mighty Mississippi around Lake Providence during high waters. I know it's low now, but there's no way I'd cross it in a boat less than 20' long in those parts.

I work on the Miss. in St. James Pa., and see a good bit of
ers from time to time.
Most of the year I think you are safe from current, undertow, and debris, but you are never safe from drunken/high reckless boat captains.

There is a whole sport associated with river yakking. I thought it was pretty common.

I'll add chunks of ice the size of Volkswagen's in Palmyra Chute.
