Brad Bird is an exceptional filmmaker, but I have always believed that if you are a great filmmaker you should stick to your strengths and his strength is in the animation genre.
BTW, I just looked up the critical acclaim for the 4 movies he has directed. Not only are all 4 in the 90s in terms of overall positive critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but they are higher in their critical ratings via the top critics.

I wouldn't mind JJ Abrams getting his hands on them, but then again he's pretty much made a Star Wars film with Star Trek.
