It's voluntary, very difficult to get into, and very easy to get kicked out of if you don't adhere to the extremely high standards.

This is correct.

it is awesome. that whole area is surreal, the changing of the guard, the vietnam wall, arlington, jfk's memorial. but yeah the tomb is number one for me, and those guys are the best of the best.

They were there throughout Hurricane Irene too.

With Metro not running I doubt there's anyone there to guard against though.

If you ever get the chance to watch the changing of the guard do it. It makes you proud to be an American

FYI for all of you who don't know, who have a member of the guard that posts here...

I can't remember his handle, but here is a video of him and an article about what he did during the national championship in 2007:

Video

Article

He's from Denham Springs, and posted a lot when the article about him first came out.

ETA: He posted as BTHames.

re: Soldiers still guarding Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during Sandy

My bro-in-law used to be a tomb guard. He had the second most walks of any guard as of a few years ago. This is the best way he described the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to me.

There is one un-identified soldier from each war burried there. When he worked there he had a family come to him in tears thanking him for his service after they went in front of the tomb. The lady said she had lost her son in the war, and his body was never identified. As she was praying in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier she thought that was her son in there, and finally got to tell him good-bye!
