You should use this as an opportunity to tell your son that TM has a drug problem and that he may have allowed drugs to ruin his life or at least he has made his path to success much more difficult.

Tell him the truth about the drug war instead. This is an opportunity to teach him the dangers of a big paternalistic intrusive government.
