It boils down to this... David Helman breifly goes over stats and opinions so far. The main points are below and why.

Secondary is Graded in A

"The bottom line: The Tigers had to replace three starters from last year's squad, not to mention secondary coach Ron Cooper, who departed during the offseason. It hasn't mattered. LSU is ranked in the top 10 in pass defense, the secondary hasn't allowed a completion longer than 29 yards in conference play, and it has given up just two passing touchdowns in those four games."

Linebackers is Graded a B+

"The bottom line: For a unit in which Minter was the only proven commodity among many unknowns, the linebackers have not been the liability many thought they'd be."

D-Line is Graded a B+

"The bottom line: The defensive front has been strong and at times dominant. Running the ball on LSU takes a full 60-minute commitment, and the Tigers have proven adept at hurrying the quarterback, if not always bringing him down. It hasn't looked quite as easy as the preseason hype made it out to be, but that's more a product of the huge expectations put on the unit than a lack of production."

I don't know that I'd give a higher grade to the secondary than the d-line. Both have been pretty dominant but it all starts with the D-line IMO

I think the main reason they are a B+ is because the pre-season hype was nobody will gain a yard all season and we will have 8 sacks a game

I dunno...i think that A grade for the secondary can be attributed greatly to the ability of the D-line to get pressure...even if they aren't sacking the QB they are making him panic and pushing his line into him and getting hands on and around him and the ball

True. Both units actually compliment the other.

I've been more than pleasantly surprised with the level of linebacker play.

If our secondary grades out as an A against Bammer.....we win that game...IMO.

Not a fan of his version of what he sees.

The Safeties have been disappointing this year. They have taken bad angles, gotten stupid penalties, given up big plays, and missed tackles in bunches in our conference games. Had Tharold Simon not really stepped it up in the 2nd half last week, you could put him in with this group as well.

Compared to our Linebackers-who are missing a starter and a talented backup in Tahj Jones & Kwon Alexander-as well as our DL-who are coming off the loss of a Top 15 pick and a preseason injury to Ke Ke Mingo? That's a laughable grade.

Our DL & Linebackers have been strengths of this team so far. Jalen Mills, Jalen Collins & Micah Eugene and Ronnie Martin have put in some serious work for young players in this Secondary, and the future is now out there.

But the strength of this defense is the Front 7.

Grades are spot on IMO. Who knows how good the LB group would be had Kwon Alexander not gotten injured. He was starting to really make some plays.

I've also seen a lot of coverage sacks this year as well. It seems like when the DLine can't get a pass rush the QB has no where to throw the ball.

Second that. Minter is a beast.

The reason for not meeting expections is the offense keeping the D on the field for 35+ mins a game. If the defense is on the feild for 25 mins like a run dominated offense is supposed to do, then I say we meet the pre season hype.

Good Point. That's where our passing game has to get better on third and 5/7 yards. Even if we don't score on every drive, the D gets more time to rest the longer our Offense stays on the field...We can play field position with Wing as our P as well.

no way secondary is above dline. no way. reid and simon have not consistently played up to par. well, neither has mingo.

I'd say

DL = A-
LB = A
DB = B+

The impressive thing is that is all despite the offense. Think 1/9 every week. Also, not showing up themselves against the cupcakes and giving up some ground statistically for no reason. This is honestly the top defense in the country.

My field-of-view is limited so I'll put my thought in the form of a question:

Is there a better unit than our DL is in all of CFB? And if so who/whose?
