Absolutely. And I've never said Apple is stupid for making those.
Apple has a fiercely (and sometimes comically) loyal fanbase, and one of the biggest reasons is because they are genius when it comes to marketing. It's one of the biggest reasons they're the behemoth they are today. Props to Steve Jobs for being smart when it came to that. Apple positioned itself fantastically.

meh, it's mainly b/c their products just work well, are reliable and they all work together well virus free, when you buy apple you know you are getting the best tech without having to be a scientific rocket to figure it all out. they market themselves.

The whole Justin Long Mac vs. Old guy PC commercials helped establish and solidify Apple as being "hip and cool." I wonder how successful that whole campaign was for them...and that was before the iPhones came out, which only further helped establish that feel.

maybe... if anything that campaign was a turnoff for me, i switched to apple when microsoft killed the Zune, they abandoned me, and so i went to the competition and have since seen the light.
and i know this is cliche, but i remember dos and finding plugins your computer not recognizing your printer and all that kinda of stuff, and the way apple products all work together without having to do anything, man it's swell.

People are too caught up in the "it's the same product" schtick. It's about hitting a different price point and tapping a new market. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that would love to have an iPad but the price is out of their reach or not justifiable. The mini bridges that gap.
Add in the fact that Apple is pushing hard on the educational aspect of the mini. It's a good bulk sale to school districts.

ETA: Sorry, i just doubled my MBA resolution. the 13" MBP resolution is lower than the Air, so doubling that the 13" retina MBP should be 2560x1600

I didn't know that...that makes some sense. And it's a good strategy.
I also didn't realize iPads were that expensive. My iP3GS is getting slow and aggravating, and I was up for an upgrade, so I ordered a new iPhone a couple weeks ago. While I was in there, I asked how much the iPads were and he said something like $649 (I think). I couldn't believe they were that much...granted, it was for a new one (is it the 3 now?), but still...that's a lot of money.

I'm not an apple fan boy.
I have an iphone 4 (not upgrading anytime soon) and had the 3G before it.
I have had iTunes/ipod since 2003 (when there wasnt really an alternative) and have invested at least $2000 into it over the years.
Getting the ipad mini will acomplish a few things:
-I'll get the smaller, more portable tablet that I was hoping for.
-I'll keep all the songs and apps I have purchased
-I'll have something to do while my wife watches shitty TV but I gain points by being in the same room
The main thing I see over the Nexus 7 (the other tab I'm looking at) is the fact that my itunes purchases will be useful on this device. Justifies the increase in price from $250 to $350-$400

I'm actually really interested in the 13" retina
I love having high resolution screens but I also like small form factor laptops.. full HD 13 inch laptops are virtually nonexistent (asus makes one but I don't think I'll be spending $1500 for a laptop anytime soon)
I probably won't buy the MBP but the fact that Mac is putting it out will force other laptop manufacturers to compete

actually I just looked at newegg, and it seems a lot of new acer and asus full HD 13.3 inch laptops are coming out at the end of this month with Windows 8. Maybe I'll be getting a new laptop soon after all.
(granted none of them have the ridiculous retina resolutions, but I'd probably have to downscale most games to 1080p anyway)

If you can afford the approx $400 for the mini you can afford the $600 for the regular iPad.
The point here is that some people don't WANT the big one. Some people want a more portable version.
I currently want a tablet. I don't want to spend $600 on it. I want a smaller, portable tablet for traveling. I want to keep my iTunes music and apps.
iPad mini accomplishes all 3 of the goals i set for a tablet purchase. Why can't people see that this is a great move for Apple. I am one of many many people in my situation who will buy one.
