damn thats awesome. this thread causes my first post on the OB. it makes me want to do some research into this and do it myself.
is it hard to get to the point to where your able to take a bird out solo and hunt with it?

You mean training-wise? Or legal-wise?
Either way, it's the same answer - usually 3-4 weeks from trap date. Once the bird is ready to go, you can take it out hunting whenever you want. Your sponsor doesn't need to be with you, although he might want to go with you to show you the ropes in the beginning. Your sponsor is really just your source of information and guidance.
The longest wait is from when you decide you want to do it and time to trap your first hawk. If you do decide you'd like to try it, now is the time of year you should get started. That will give you a hunting season to schmooze it up with local falconers and find someone willing to sponsor you. Then you'll have the spring and summer to get all the paperwork done and a mews (hawk cage/building) built.
