Teague, how did you catch the hawk? This would be really cool to try. How do you acquire one of these licenses? I would like to give it a try some day. We have tons of hawks in Northeast LA along the MS river. Also, what's the best hunt you have ever had? Amount of game you have caught?

There are various ways to catch them. As I've mentioned before on here, and gotten flamed for it, I'd rather not put it on a public forum that doesn't pertain to falconry. You can easily find how it's done on the internet, if you're searching for it. I just don't want to put it here where any joe blow can happen upon it.

Acquiring a license...... Basically, you have to convince another falconer to sponsor you for your two year apprenticeship. They have to sign some paperwork. Then you have to pass a written exam, and have your facilities and equipment inspected. Then you'll be given a permit that allows you to trap a bird. You can only have one hawk at a time during your apprenticeship and you're allowed one replacement per year if something happens to that one.

Best hunt I've ever had? One rabbit. I only have one season under my belt and neither I nor my hawk did particularly well. The best hunt I've ever been on, before I was an apprentice, we killed 3 rabbits and chased a few more.
