Aminu in battle for starting SF spot

While New Orleans Hornets Coach Monty Williams continues to wait, he said the starting small forward spot remains up for grabs with four games remaining before the regular-season opener Oct .31 against the San Antonio Spurs.
If Aminu sputters, Hornets rookie Darius Miller could emerge as a surprise starter. Miller, who was a teammate of No. 1 overall pick Anthony Davis at Kentucky where they won a national championship last season, appears to be catching on quickly. Williams said after Tuesday’s practice that Miller, a second-round pick, has shown a lot of signs he can make plays off the dribble.

"We would like for Chief (Aminu) to take that position and say it’s mine,’’ Williams said. "We’ve got some games left to see if he can do that. Al Farouq is a guy that should know more about that position for us because he’s been in the system for a little bit. But nobody has really stepped out and dominated the competition just yet. But Darius has shown a lot of signs that he can knock down a shot and make plays off the dribble.’’

It was anticipated before the preseason began that backup power forward Ryan Anderson would shift to small forward because of his ability to extend defenses with his 3-point shooting. But Williams said he likes Anderson better at power forward.
"The more I watch those guys play, Anthony has that skill set where he can play the wing a little bit,’’ Williams said. "Ryan (Anderson) is really good at playing the four and learning those sets should be easier for him. But we don’t know, it’s still a work in progress.’’

so...Aminu or Miller starting at SF? Anderson coming off the bench? or Aminu/Miller, Anderson, and Davis starting with Lopez off the bench?

Wow, I had no idea Miller was doing so well. That's great to hear.
From the sound of it, we should have some pretty quality depth.

nowhere in that quote does Monty say Miller is doing well. he says Aminu isn't doing as well as he hoped.

again, don't get where you are getting this from. All this may be is Monty lighting a fire under Aminu's arse.

I don't know whether to be excited for Miller, or pissed Aminu hasn't made that step. I don't doubt Miller might be making plays in practice, but from the preseason and summer league games, if Aminu hasn't progressed enough to be definitely better than him, then it is discouraging.

Aminu leads all SF in turnover percentage the past two seasons. I hope someone is able to take that job away from him.
I'm just hoping AFA can settle into that Corey Brewer type role that provides energy, defense, rebounding and easy buckets in transition off the bench.

My thoughts as well. This didn't sound like Miller was playing good enough to win the starting role. This sounds like Aminu is letting Miller stick around to compete for the starting role. Not a great sign imo

Been hoping to hear him say that. Davis has the length to give elite SFs fits as well as the speed to keep up with them.

what about Warrick? I thought I heard them say he would play the 3. Or is he gonna be a 3/4 off the bench depending on the personnel?

i don't think Warrick is gonna play at all.

Be excited for Miller. The Hornets don't need a world beater at SF, they just need a good defender and someone that can hit the easy/open shots. Miller definitely has the potential to fill that roll. And it sounds like while Aminu may not be stepping up to full time starter level, he is stepping up to full time rotation player level so hopefully the comparisons to juju can stop.

Miller isnt ready and aminu isnt ready but has had the time. Look for a veteran sf (yeah i dont know of one the block), what ive been saying all offseason. Have miller come of the bench.
