Trials of the Honey Badger

This story appears in the October 22, 2012 issue of Sports Illustrated.

For Mathieu, there's a lot riding on his ability to sort out his life. Multiple NFL executives say he could be drafted in the third round if he comes out after this season. His stock could rise if he returns to LSU, but it could drop if he fails to live up to his sophomore year. As of September, Miles perpetuated the feeling around LSU that Mathieu would return. "If he stays the course, I like his chances of being. ... " He searched for the words. "Being back?" someone offered. Miles shook his head no. "That's not the point. The point is being better."

Once the semester ends, Mathieu is scheduled to spend a month with Lucas in Houston. Lucas reports that Mathieu is doing well in his four classes and that he texted Lucas a photograph of A's he received on two recent assignments. But it's too early to declare victory. "It's not crazy for him now," says Lucas. "It will get crazy when he gets back to being the Honey Badger."

Sports Illustrated Special Report: Endangered: The Trials of the Honey Badger

Tyrann Mathieu Found overnight Fame Last Year, But Its Spoils Have led to Comparisons With his imprisoned Father, Rehab, Exile from the LSU Football Program and, Possibly, NCAA Violations

By Thayer Evans and Pete Thamel

NEW YORK, NY (10.16.12) -- Sports Illustrated Senior Writers Thayer Evans and Pete Thamel get inside the world of former LSU defensive back Tyrann Mathieu, one of college football’s most exciting players last season who was kicked off the team in August for multiple failed drug tests. The story Evans and Thamel uncover is much more complex and they deliver it with perspective from members of Mathieu’s family, including letters from his imprisoned father, a group of childhood friends that calls itself Era Nation, and former NBA player John Lucas, who is working with Mathieu in rehab. The report also uncovers possible NCAA violations committed by Mathieu and other LSU players.

Here are some highlights from this week’s SI cover story “The Trials of the Honey Badger” which now also appears on SI.com (www.si.com).

Possible NCAA Violations: Since last January Mathieu has allowed his image to be used on a flyer promoting an event at a local nightclub, appeared in several online videos promoting other events and, multiple sources told SI, received benefits at the club that could affect his eligibility. NCAA rule 12.5.2.1 says that anyone who “accepts any remuneration or permits the use of his or her name or picture to advertise, recommend or promote directly the sale or use of a commercial product or service of any kind” is ineligible.

Evans and Thamel report:
- Several of the videos promote events at a Baton Rouge Club called The Palace.

- One in particular encourages viewers to attend an Era Nation party at the club on March 10, 2012. Mathieu appears in the video, and an event promoter says “the whole LSU football team” will be there.

- A flyer for the party has two photographs of Mathieu in his LSU jersey and describes the event as an Era Nation Album Release Party for Tyrann Mathieu (It also features photographs of former LSU standout Mo Clairborne and current LSU sophomore Anthony Johnson who are listed as party hosts). Note: When asked about it, Johnson denied any involvement; Clairborne says he was aware of the party but did not attend.

- In another video Mathieu is onstage at The Palace talking on a mic about the club’s chicken wings and fries. A source closely affiliated with the club told SI that Mathieu received access to the club’s VIP area: “Every time he came, we let all the football players, like his teammates, in for free.”

- Mathieu is also featured on a flyer for a January 14, 2012 party at Club H20 in New Orleans.

Several people discussed the athlete’s drug use:
- Said Mathieu’s father Darrin Hayes, who is serving a life sentence in prison for murder, in a letter to SI: “Tyrann has a drug problem. I expected more out of him because he know how I lost everything behind drugs.”

The Era Nation Crew: Late in high school Mathieu and his friends formed a group they called Era Nation comprised of self-described athletes, rappers and songwriters. Mathieu stayed close to the crew from high school to LSU, even as he became a national star. Over the last year Mathieu has appeared in multiple videos online that show he and the Era Nation crew at clubs, partying.

On Mathieu’s Future:
- “I don’t know what triggers life may bring,” says Lucas when discussing the complexities of Mathieu’s future. “This isn’t about smoking weed, this is about what life shoots you and you handle it without medicating your failures or medicating your success.” Mathieu is expecting a baby boy in January.

Really rooting for him to come back. Would be an incredible story if he makes it. The crowd will go berserk the first time he steps back into the field

SI Cover - Endangered: The Perilous Road of the Honey Badger

This is a stretch, but the SI Cover title is an interesting play on words. "Periolous"...Perrilloux (Ryan).

Kid is promoting a rap/singing group which has nothing to do with football. The people at the club are chicken shite to exploit a situation for another then act like "The LSU Football Team" was complicit in these promotions which were basically intended for a specific sub group (college students who were into Hip-Hop). Unless the NCAA wants to start a shite fire that will have it's stench and it's reverberations affect the entirety of college sports in the form of thousands of lawsuits, then they will leave this type of thing alone. The exploitation of these athletes by the Universities and the NCAA is simply disgusting. To go after what amounts to, the very identity of Black youth for celebrating Hip-Hop Culture in the way that it has been celebrated, marketed, and promoted since it's inception would be disastrous for the NCAA.

Im a fan of Pete Thamel and Im surprised he put his name down as co-author on such crap.. The article doesn't have any idea where it wants to go.. They were obviously not able to get some key interviews or questions answered but had a deadline to meet and threw up an incomplete article with zero direction.

What a desperate, overreaching, alarmist piece of journalism. SI should be ashamed.

This article sheds NO new light and is the same ole shite served up again. If there is one new thing to learn from this, it is that when TM7 is reinstated on the football team, the party will be at The PLACE!!!

What a joke of an article. Most of the article is full of quotes from uncited sources and from a man who in prison for the rest of his life.

What a creditable article.
