So I'm thinking that the leg chop will save Hershel, ala Dayle in the comic. He's too important to getting the prison going to kill off this early. Besides, he spent all winter growing that marvelous face bear.

Yeah....he will definitely live. Just transferring that part of the story line to Hershel.
