While I understand and agree with your premise about danger in pride without reason, this portion of your analogy is incorrect. The Afghan people really don't identify with a national identity. To them it is family, then village, then tribe. The tribal identity is as high level as most of the population in Afghanistan goes.
BTW, that's one of the major issues over there. Since they don't care about being "Afghan" people, they don't really care about who is in power. All they are concerned with is local stability and security and don't care who provides it. That's why they really didn't care about the Taliban being in control.

probably fairly accurate. blacks are voting for obama because hes a democrat. they are turning out in greater numbers because hes black, though.

Obviously I'll want substantive proof that a significant percentage of voters are voting against Obama because he's black, and not the hundreds of other reasons for voting against him. That doesn't mean I'll refuse to acknowledge it. It may be difficult to prove, but if someone wants to make a sweeping claim like that they better be able to back it up with figures.
