I don't remember how old i was when i was diagnosed with adhd,but i have been taking concerta most of my life.
4 years is not young to be diagnosed with adhd, Actually, for a diagnosis of ADHD, a child should have symptoms of inattentiveness and/or hyperactivity before the age of 7. I think we often don't diagnose ADHD at age 4 because it does not affect a child's ability to function.

Just because they have add/adhd symptoms doesn't mean they have a disorder. Those symptoms are normal for a four year old. ALL kids have attention deficit and hyperactivity. By definition, there has to affect the child ability to function in some way. Hence the disorder portion. The symptoms must be present by the age of five. But it can only be diagnosed and should only be treated if there is a serious issue. A four year fidgeting in their seat in pre-school does not qualify. Read my earlier post. I don't disagree with treatment. My daughter is on Concerta. I just don't think it's appropriate for a 4 yo and I think it's overprescribed. Can't say I have never been guilty of giving in to pressure of parents or teachers to medicate. However, when we see no benefit the medicine is stopped immeditately. I demand to see drastic improvements in order to continue to prescribe.

Drop a dime on the doc with the board of medical examiners.
Also, tell your brother and his wife they are lazy, selfish people that obviously do not feel like putting in the effort of parenting.

No joke I learned some interesting facts tonight that are pertinent to this thread.
I just had my first kid.
I live up north.
A bunch of my family is up from the south meeting the kid.
I got drunk with my godfather and he told me a story that he made me promise not to repeat.
We were talking life and raising kids.
When I was young i was crazy and almost uncontrollable. My mom wanted to put me on meds. My dad said frick no and i was just a kid being a kid. They fought about this.
I'm by no means the most impressive person in the world but I make a good living and have nice shite and a bunch of money in the bank.
I contribute some of my success to my go go go gadget brain.
Do what you think is right but this country is full of fricking pussies who want to take the path of water. The easiest path. Water always finds the easiest path . Don't raise the kids. Just put them on fricking meds.
Don't be like water.

I have found that ADD/ADHD is easily cured with a few good arse whippings. 
All my kids acted like this. My oldest one will never forget the two day in a row she got in trouble in kindergarten and got her butt tore both times when she got home. I've never had a problem with her since in school.
My little ones are gonna soon find out the same lesson if they don't settle down. My 4 yo boy pulled the fire alarm a couple weeks agos

That's fricking asinine. I feel like this shite goes on for a couple of reasons.
1. A lot of doctors love to write scrips for some odd reason. Go figure.
2. Parents are either a)stupid or b)don't give a shite.
Has your brother never taken adderall or something similar? Some people seem to have no idea that's it's actually a legitimate drug. That stuff aint like popping an aspirin because your head hurts. It completely alters your mood, appetite, heart rate, body temp, and even makes you have serious cravings. Trust me, I normally smoke like a pack every week or two, but when I'm taking addy it can easily be a pack a day. It's actually a pretty serious drug

Let me just say this, I was diagnosed with a disease at age 6 and I was in and out of doctor's offices my whole life. All they did was throw medications at me and tell me that there was no way I'd be independent of such medications.
I have seen nothing less than 50 specialists in my lifetime hoping one would provide me a different answer.
It was only due to my parents' love and endless research and research of my own that finally cured me and got me free of medications.
There are plenty of things doctors don't tell you, or are too lazy to discover for themselves. I as a person with no medical training, and just reading message boards of people with similar experiences cured myself of something my doctors said couldn't be done.
I'm not saying all doctors are lazy, there are good ones out there, but I think in general the profession has become lazy and way overpriced for half-ass help. They will throw medicines at you all day that have a laundry list of side-effects... just something I learned early in life is just because someone is a supposed authority in their field doesn't make them right.

There are plenty of kids that get put on that shite that were completely normal, just energetic and active. I've seen it a dozen times, and with most of the women in my family being teachers I hear about it constantly. I've only personally known two people that actually needed ADD medicine.

I was a psychotic child and I became one of the most quiet/reserved people I know after going through puberty.
I agree, it's a bad overreaction, and to not question it is even more frustrating.

Yea we are seeing it more and more at the pharmacy. I've seen 6 y/o but not younger. It is absolutely insane. These doctors are raising the kids BP with amphetamines and then dropping it with clonidine at night so they can sleep. Both drugs become addictive.

They don't owe you anything. Sounds like you need meds yourself and I'm only on page two.
I believe she is too young for the medication but that said it is none of your business. If my brother told me how to raise my kids I would politely tell him to frick off and he would reciprocate should I tell him how to raise his own.

I know a few friends with young kids that are very hyper. One had the doctor try to prescribe ADHD meds - the dad said hell no and went to a different doc.
The new Doc suggested they cut out any foods with artificial dye and see if it made a difference. Holy crap did it. The kid went from fidgeting constantly to calm and attentive with no medication whatsoever.
Another family tried the same with similair results. 3rd family did the medication and their kids a zombie.
Cliffs - in young kids it may be a food dye allergy instead of ADHD, try adjusting diet before medication.
