He's still a forward, but he definitely drops pretty deep to get the ball. It's closer to what he does for Barcelona, than what he used to do for Argentina.

Me too.

Messi has won a world cup, actually two
does he need to win a FIFA World cup? no. A players of his stature will maybe play in 4, most likely only 3. THREE, just think about it. In a competition comprising of almost every single country in the world, you only get to compete in this three times. The odds of ever winning are slim.
I think a valid point is that the Champions League has far more talent in it with stronger teams than the World Cup will have. Messi obviously has made his case in that. The problem is that he has played it with the same team, players, and system for all of his playing years. It has put his name up there but also created some criticism.
I think all Messi would need to do to win over this argument is to go to another Champions League club and have similar statistics. If he can score 25+ goals in a season with a totally different team and system, then without a doubt in my head should he be considered the best of all time.

Win? Maybe not, but at least a semi final
Dude as scored once in 2 WCS in a 6-0 drubbing, and only twice in Copa America...I know he has a bunch of assists, but that record isn't all tat great, especially when you look at how other players in the GOAT hav performed on the big stages.
Or even look at how CR7 put Portugal on his back in the Euros with a much less talented team.
At the moment Argentinas performances and his in their shirt in the big competitions are what are holding him back the most imo

The majority of Pele's legacy stems from the World Cup, partly because he never played outside of Brazil until signing with the Cosmos, unless he was with the national team. Pele is the greatest World Cup player.
Maradona cemented his GOAT legacy at the 1986 World Cup, with his two goals against England in the semifinals. However many pundits cite Maradona as the GOAT, because he played club football in Europe for years.
The Cruyff argument is also a great one, but mainly because his legacy was largely dampened by his own finicky personality. If Messi can continue at his current career arc, with him still improving, he'll be viewed as the GOAT, regardless of World Cup triumphs.

If his career continues as it is, and he's around another three maybe four years at this level, it won't matter whether or not he won the WC.

I'd argue that if not for the two goals against England in 1986, Maradona is hardly even in the discussion for GOAT.
