We know what Lincoln was like because we have tons of his personal letters and such, as well as those of his closest advisors. There was a record before videotape, you know. While we're recommending Lincoln books, The Fiery Trial is excellent, about the development of his ideology particularly slavery. Very interesting. And of course, the movie is based on Team of Rivals, which demonstrates that Seward and Stanton were pretty bad ass.

More Lincoln reviews here: LINK
quote:
Oscar Potential "Based on my own evaluation of the film and its prospects, I expect it will be a sure shot for Academy Award nominations for best picture, best director, and best actor for two-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, playing America's 16th president. ... I think it stands a very strong shot for further noms for best supporting actor Tommy Lee Jones, who plays the powerful Republican congressman Thaddeus Stevens and best supporting actress Sally Field, who appears as Lincoln's wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. ...In short, 'Lincoln' appears to be Oscar-bait incarnate." — Scott Feinberg,
quote:
Daniel Day-Lewis "The problem is that, with so much fun action happening on the House floor, the ostensible main characters get overshadowed — and none more so than Lincoln, a soft-spoken and obviously powerful figure who still isn't part of some of the film's best scenes. Day-Lewis's performance is faultless and surprisingly restrained, but he spends far too much of the film acting opposite Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln (giving a performance badly out of step with the film's low-key tone) or Joseph Gordon-Levitt as eldest son Robert, a character with almost no bearing on the plot." — Katey Rich, Cinema Blend

I'm %100 sure at least he himself will be awesome in this. But being better than My Left Foot is almost hard to imagine. Or Bill Cutting. He appears to extremely resemble Lincoln, and I think on that alone people will say its best performance but out acting his roles in My Left Foot/Gangs of New York, not so sure. Edit: Typed his name as Bob the Butcher for some reason first. Though I think if DDL could probably pull off Bob the Builder and make it a good movie.

The Boxer is still my favorite DDL performance. Great movie.

The reviews I am reading from this thing say that it is a solid film that is more than likely going to secure nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor (Tommy Lee Jones). Sally Field is now in the mix for a Supporting Actress nomination and you'll probably see some buzz for its screenplay as well. Look for 10+ nominations in January if the buzz continues.

Were you on tv when you posted that. I mean that read like you were on E! News or something. Alright I will look for all those things in January if the buzz continues.

I mean stuff like his mannerisms, his walk, his voice, etc. I know you can tell what kind of person he was by letters and such, but it just seems it'd be hard to tell the whole story with that.

JGL said between takes he'd joke around and stuff but they'd still refer to him as "Mr president"

All of which have been described in great detail by people who lived at the time of his presidency. Obviously we'll never know exactly how he sounded, but we have good enough descriptions to give Day-Lewis a lot to go on.

Manhunt was great. What about Team Of Rivals? I've had it for a while, but still haven't read it.

Man you guys are ridiculous. When I watched Gangs of New York, I wasn't thinking... "Man DDL is a great actor." I Was thinking "Damn, Bill the Butcher is a bastard." DDL became Bill the Butcher in that movie. I am sure this woman means the same thing. But this is typical Movie Board. Guess Lincoln is gonna be the new "cool to bash" movie.

Could y'all imagine if DDL did a cameo on a Breaking Bad episode directed Nolan in which he is seen watching an episode of The Wire? Spooge.

s is what I was thinking too. No doubt DDL puts in a great performance, but how do we actually know he becomes Lincoln? I'm certain no one alive has actually seen Abe Lincoln in person
He was great in Bill amd Teds Excellent Adventure

Most will be eating this shite up no marker what. Any criticism comes off as bashing because people around here get so hyper-sensative about certain movies.

we all did during the entire shoot. He would visit us extras (the ones portraying soldiers in the Petersburg scenes) off camera as Lincoln, just as Lincoln did in 1865. It was eerie.
