Neville roughs up Bastrop

Bastrop's offense presented Neville's defense with arguably its toughest test to date, but the Tigers mostly contained the Rams in a 43-23 win.

The Tigers' defense covered up two Neville fumbles, one with a fourth-and-one stuff in the first quarter and the other a Julius Jones third-quarter interception.

Jones' interception on an attempted screen pass stopped a Bastrop drive in Neville territory with the Tigers leading just 20-6.

Neville (6-0, 1-0), the No. 1 team in Class 4A, scored the next 23 points on three straight possessions to race away from the Rams (4-2, 0-1) and take control of District 2-4A after the opener. Bastrop entered the game No. 8 in the 4A polls.

Tigers junior linebacker Ashari Goins said the key was containing Bastrop quarterback Jaetarius Davis.

"We had to watch (Davis) and not let him get outside of the pocket," Goins said. "When he gets outside the pocket, he's very dangerous.

"Keep him inside the pocket and get pressure from the outside."

After Jones' interception, Salarrious Jones scored on an 18-yard run for a 28-7 edge. After a failed Bastrop fourth down, in which the Rams were 0-for-3, Neville's Thor Lowens rushed for his second score and a 36-7 edge.

Demon Baker scored Neville's final touchdown, a 7-yard run to go up 43-7 with 9:33 left in the fourth quarter.

Bastrop coach Thomas Bachman tipped his cap to Neville but said his Rams missed some opportunities early.

After Neville's Kavontae Turpin fumbled a punt on Bastrop's first possession, the Rams couldn't convert a fourth-and-one.

"We had a few opportunities early, but we just couldn't get anything really going," "(Neville coach Mickey McCarty) does a first-classjob, and I think he does it the right way.

"I didn't feel like we played very well, and I didn't think I coached very well. We got away from some of the things we do well, and I take the blame for that."

Neville's John Diarse powered the offense once again, rushing for 154 yards and throwing for another 104 on 10-of-11 passing.

Diarse found Salarrious Jones for a 15-yard corner route on third down for a 7-0 lead. Lowens added a 1-yard run for a 14-0 lead with 5:12 left.

"The coaches told me he threw only (one) incomplete pass, so that means he was accurate," McCarty said. "He had nice runs and other guys ran well, so that's a credit to the offensive line.

"We still put the ball on the ground too much, and that's unlike us. We had too many penalties as well."

The offense only lost two fumbles but put a total of five on the ground.

Diarse scrambled for a 13-yard touchdown run on fourth down with just eight seconds remaining, but Bastrop's Jatavious Wilson picked up a bobbled kickoff and ran it back for a 75-yard score to give the Rams momentum into halftime.

"That kid made a great play on the return, and we did a poor job in coverage. Credit them for gaining momentum at the end of the half, and credit our kids for coming out in the second half and putting the game away."

Good for John.

Part of me wishes Jetavious Wilson wasn't a lost cause academically to see if he would've been offered by LSU. Very small but a playmaker and was very highly thought of by our staff in February/March. Not sure how he would fit in at LSU but I'd be interested to see if he would've legitimately been sought after by the staff.

It's definitely got a few good ones in there.
Lets see, you've got

Ashari
Jaetarius
Sallarius
Thor
Demon
Kevontae
Jatavious

Quite the collection. Wonder what the baby names book says about those as far as meaning.

I have a feeling Diarse will NOT be going to LSU. I expect a last minute switch.

I agree. NELA's gut feeling was just some out dated potted meat he had for breakfast.

Who's he gonna switch to? Not gonna be Bama. Who else is even recruiting him at this point? He's very solid.

I'm guessing you we're agreeing with me and replying the the other guy. But yes there is no doubt about it on Diarse. People just post stupid shite after a loss.

You got it. I forget sometimes to push reply on the poster intended and just push it on the last poster in the thread. Definitely agree with you. Diarse has pretty much shut down his recruitment and likely doesn't talk to other schools(I try to never speak in absolutes on things like this because I don't know who he talks to)

I usually don't get into the absolutes myself and actually said today that I avoid the Diarse subject all together. I guess the guy posting this about him pissed me off for some reason tonight and I had to reply. I usually stay out of John D threads all together. I read this one bc the OP was trying to start a good thread about him.

John and his family wouldnt have committed if they werent 100% sure about coming to LSU...I know the family and they arent like that...very good people. Mother told me this summer that she was glad it was all over and that now John can enjoy his senior year without all pressure

Oh I know and def don't have any concerns about him coming. It's the people that act like they know something that bug me. That's why I usually stay out of his threads bc I know everything w/o needing "inside" info. I just thought it was going to be a thread about how well he played and you had someone get on here to troll.

Check the time stamp on my post. It was in the 1st half and LSU had the lead.

No doubt he is a great athlete and kid. Never intended for this to be a troll.

IMO, I think he will (and rightfully so) sign with another school. If I were a skilled player I would.

My bad on the trolling and I understand your reasoning behind it. It all depends on what position you think he is going to play. As I stated before, I usually stay out of threads on JD bc there isn't a place I could go and get info better than what I get now. I'm not going to say it's like this or let's make a ban bet bc you're just giving your opinion. All I'm willing to say is if you are a Tiger fan( based on your name I think you are) you will be happy on signing day. After that I might talk.

Diarse will sign with LSU unless the bottom drops completely out of this season and the current coaching staff is gone and a new one not yet decided. That won't happen, J.D. will be a Tiger and prove instrumental in steering Hootie to B.R. next year.

My two cents.
