GPS or phone app for freshwater ??

I have MotionX GPS app on my iPhone (that I don't know how to use). Seems tough to see my phone in bright daylight, too.
I'd like to have a tool to mark where I've been, and to help me get out in the dark, or if I get lost when freshwater fishing... even in bright daylight.
Should I look into a handheld gps or should I just learn to use the app on my phone?

handhelds arent great either. I have one and its pretty much pointless. I use it to mark spots but I dont think it could get me out if i got turned around in the marsh.
Cant even see the thing with sunglasses on.
