So, I have a friend who's sound company was working the shows at the county fair in Podunk, Texas. A friend and I drove out here not only to spend some time with him, but also because the opening band is my absolute favorite.
They are up and coming in the red- dirt scene, are well-respected, and have a really strong following in their own right. They put on a hell of a show, as usual.
The headliner was this Nashville douchebag who played 90% cover songs. I shite you not. My buddy brought to setlist to FOH and said the same thing.
You have this amazing, original band on stage KILLING it and you decide to follow up with this asshat? Disgusting.
I told my buddy I was going to stage dive and hope nobody caught me.
That's how bad it is. Nashville sucks.

I understand your pain but who were the bands?
I hated to see that American Aquarium was opening up for Corey Smith a while back... sure it was good for them and I'm glad they got that opportunity but as a fan it just felt wrong....

Turnpike Troubadours opened. They were amazing (duh).
Some twatwaffle named Josh Thompson headlined.

In a perfect world they would never open up for anyone.

Like you said... duh. They are the best band in the world, within the country music genre, right now in my opinion.

I've tried, but agree with you. Don't get the appeal.

And I guess I get it if it's some big name Nashvegas act, because they obviously (somehow) have commercial appeal. It was some crappy no-name who played nothing but cover songs.
Evan (TT) watched part of the show and I could see it all over his face...he literally couldn't wrap his mind around what was happenening. He pours his heart and soul into everything he writes and this dude sings other people's songs and is the main attraction? It's a travesty.

Well, who was the band in question?......I actually like covers if the band can make them their own....i.e the gourds. They do 3 or 4 covers a show. But it informs their originals and is not anything like the actual original....and I'm not even talking about Jin n juice...which I wish they would stop doing.......

The honesty of the genre is what appeals to me the most I think. My favorite bands of the genre are amazing writers and their songs are self revealing, flaws and all.
I will readily admit that the presentation within the genre is oft times ugly however being pretty has never been a requirement for great art.
Imo, and this is strictly my opinion, the worlds greatest current songwriters reside in the realm of red dirt music. I can't think of one other current musical movement that has a comparable depth of greatness when it comes to songwriting.
(I will admit that there are single bands that prove to be exceptions. For instance, I think Colin Meloy of the Decemberists is probably the greatest songwriter of today. However taking the scene/genre as a whole Red Dirt takes the day.)

I agree but at least he can take solace in the fact that at least HE knows that he writes genuinely HONEST great tunes.
The low hanging fruit (not talking about you guys who've admitted you don't like red dirt... I understand that) will never be able to comprehend, follow and enjoy honest art.... They just want to dance and drink to songs they know.

nasheville has a great music scene. that's just your fault for having bad taste.

The bar scene in Nashville is great... comparable to Austin. The shite that gets pumped through the mainstream airwaves via Nashville....... Pure. shite. Which is what everyone is referring to when they speak of "nashville country". Any one who knows anything about music knows that there are some extremely talented musicians who call that city home.
But if you try to argue that mainstream country is in a good place right now then I have no choice but to disregard any future statements you may make regarding country music or music in general for that matter.

When I said nasheville has a great music scene, I wasn't referring to country. Simply not my cup of tea. And "the shite that gets pumped through the mainstream airwaves" is pure shite in any city.
And while I may not be a fan of country, I can certainly say that mainstream country at present is pretty much the worst thing ever. just a step above the dubstep craze of the last 7 or so years.

Well when people refer to Nashville in a negative light when talking about country music then it is pretty much universally understood that they are referring to mainstream country music.
and thats fine. While I don't understand how anyone can not like Turnpike Troubadours I can accept the fact that its not for everyone.

Sorry...that was my fault. I made the statement "Nashville sucks". I was referring to Nashville country, which is, for the most part, hot garbage. I have never been to the city but I hear it's very nice with lots to do
In fact, one of my very favorite singer/songwriters is proud to call Nashville home...a Mr. Will Hoge.
I should have been more specific, I apologize

I take back my apology...you can't even spell Nashville.

But I've got a question for you. Do you lump bands like Lucero and Cory Branan into the red dirt genre?
I find myself doing so even though they have a lot of qualities that seperate themselves greatly from that scene. I just feel like their attitude and approach greatly reflect the whole idea, so to speak, of the red dirt scene.
Whats your opinion on the matter since you're about as much of an insider on the scene as this board has?

I'd definitely consider them more Americana than anything.
Saw Lucero at SXSW last year and they were AWESOME. Ben Nichols is a class act, too.
I just realized I only halfway answered your question...I get the comparison to TX country, and I think it's because of the utter truthfullness of the lyrics. I said this in another thread...one of the reasons I love Turnpike so much is because, after spending some time with Evan, I realized just how authentic and sincere his songwriting is. He really IS just a good ol' country boy from rural Oklahoma.

Probably a more fitting but hell what is Red Dirt if not Americana/Country. It just goes hand in hand for me.

Most is just folk, which has been around forever. Some good, some bad, just can't take much of it in one sitting.
