I might be dense, but I didn't make the connection between "The Cause" in the film and Scientology. Seems to me that the film makes a mockery of the "cause", though. The "cause" starts out about going back in one's personal history via some type of hypnosis. "Our spirits and souls are thousands/millions/trillions of years old." Then at some point the leader changes the "cause" to be more about "imagine if...". Probably was a key junction in the movie that was lost on me.
(My wife suggested the film and I walked in not having any background on what it was about, etc.)

It isn't PTA's best, but you should know it wasn't going to be a normal movie walking in there. I actually had two elderly couples in front of me walk out in the middle of it yesterday. It's definitely not for everyone
Unfortunately the film has nothing to do with Scientology or L Ron. To me it was more about the mental status of soldiers after the war.
Phoenix is absolutely incredible though.

I'm no movie buff, so had to look up the director's previous films (below). The only other one I saw was "There Will Be Blood" and it was "okay". Not nearly as bad as this one, but not one to see again.

Most of the audience when we went last night was elderly. I'm sure many were offended at the dialogue. Most everyone can appreciate a well-placed f-bomb when called for, but the dialogue in a couple of areas is just nonsense. Like a little kid learning bad words and spewing them for the first time.
