You just have to look at lots of pics, then see lots of birds in RL.
I was always the type to look at pictures of animals. When I was a kid, I was reading eNcyclopedias every night instead of novels(we had maybe 13 channels of TV). S and B were my two favorites because of the pictures of snakes and birds.

You just described my childhood, except you had 3X as many tv channels as we did. Always looked forward to sunday night and Nature on PBS.

NBC because KALB had a tower close by, or it would have been none

I know it was only networks and PBS for a while. So maybe 4 channels. No idea when we finally got cable. I remember watching wrastlin' on TBS. Tony Atlas and Mr. Wrastlin' #2 FTW.

I bought it for less than $10 on iTunes. And it makes ID'n birds dirt simple. Can do it via any number of features. It's got a database built up where you put in something like shape, location, behavior, color, whatever and it will spit out a list of likely birds. It's got about a thousand of them in it. So even if you know zip about birds, you will be able to ID the one you're looking at in seconds.
If you like birding and have a phone for it, it's worth it. You can't tell me you haven't spent ten times that on the books which mostly have no more than two pictures of it. This has SHITLOADS of pics of them as well as the paintings and honestly, the paintings make ID a lot easier than the pics do.
Trust me, I'm not into spending money on apps, but after downloading the free version, it became obvious that it was totally worth getting the Pro.

Oh, I have nothing bad to say about something like that.
At this point in my life though, if it's in La, and I can see it well, I know what it is(excluding gulls/shore because I just don't care about them). I struggled for about 7 seconds Sunday on a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. No idea why I don't see them more often.

Yeah I'm gull/tern retarded as well. I've started getting better though since getting this app. Still not as good as I am with most others though.
I got all excited since getting this thing. So far in the past few months I've gotten a handfull of first time birds as a result. Woodstorks, spotted sandpiper were the most recent.

While on vacation in Homer, AK in July, my wife and I watched a bald eagle chase down a seagull in flight and kill it. It was a hell of a dogfight/chase for a couple of minutes though. Saw the eagle chase two more that day, but it was unsuccessful. Awesome sight.

I love watching eagles. And Ospreys. Last year we watched one of each fishing Cross Lake around the boat. Osprey was a better fisherman but the eagle pulled some wild shite. We watched him spot a fish from close to a quarter mile away, drop out of a tree and glide to it low and obviously from behind it so it never saw him coming. Then just pluck a bass that looked like it was probably a couple lbs out like it was nothing, fly back up and eat it.
The Ospreys are more consistent but they're more active too.

While snapper fishing at a rig once, I saw an Osprey dive down into the water and come out with a nice size hardtail. He got airborne and flew right over us with the fish head first in his talons. It reminded me of a bomb below a bomber.

Yeah they will actually turn the fish around so he's more aerodynamic. Seen them do that a few times. Neat birds.
