If we are going objectively than the answer is 88 Miami they played the toughest schedule EVER and only lost to undefeated Notre Dame. I didn't put them on my original list because I haven't really seen any games of them.

I think the 86 team was better. Never heard anyone say that about their schedule. ND and FSU finished 1 and i think 4. UM was 9-2-1 and LSU 8-4 (we won SEC but really weren;t that great) not sure about the rest of 88 Miami schedule.
Still their run from 86-92 is pretty impressive:
3 MNC's, 3 #2 finishes with only loss to the MNC (86, 88, 92) and a #3 finish in 90.
