tigers "vanilla" according to dig?

Friends, this is my first post. I feel nervous and excited at the same time. I'm not sure how to handle my emotions right now.
I'm reading the latest issue of Dig magazine. A quote from the article about mett:
" Since LSU's last national championship in 2008, the tigers have been vanilla..."
just...what? not sure if "vanilla" is the right adjective here. thoughts?

Right. No author who even had a passing familiarity with CFB would call LSU the 2008 National Champions.

Not the 2008 part though. The vanilla. Well, both The 2008 thing is a weird deal but is technically correct. Instead of explaining every time we just put 2008 in that context.

We have had vanilla type of QBs. Anything other than an air assault today is considered "vanilla".
