Nadal should take a page from Williams sisters

Says Matt Wilansky:

quote:

So here’s some sage advice, Rafa: Play a more judicious schedule. Approach the tennis calendar the same way the Williams sisters do. Don’t get hung up on rankings or the spotlight or the rigorous demands of the mandatory Masters Series events. Pick either Indian Wells or Miami. Play only two out of the three Euro Masters events, then choose between Canada and Cincinnati in the lead-up to the U.S. Open. Finally, take the rest of the year off after New York. The final two Masters events and even the ATP World Tour Finals aren’t worth the wear and tear. They just aren’t.

Nadal is at the point in his career in which we’re going to gauge him only on his Slam success. Even if he eschews some of the mandatory tournaments and his ranking takes a hit, so be it. He’s still going to be better off than playing as one of the top-three-ranked players with a beaten-down body.

I can't say I disagree one bit.

I think these guys get fined for not showing up at Masters other than Monte Carlo, but it seems like they let Fed get away with it. I completely agree with this strategy, other than his ranking would go to about 8, so draws would be tough.

I saw he is diagnosed with Hoffitis , some knee fat thing. I didn't know this whole back story about the foot. I still find it almost impossible to believe a guy with these issues and pain can run around like a jackrabbit. He is either the greatest warrior ever, or part faker.

if he's told to cut down or retire early, obviously I'd say cut down, but it does make it harder for a GOAT arguement

Lets say Nadal ends up with 1 more Major than Fed but does this and never reaches #1 again with Djok, Fed and even Murray saring it

Whos better?
Nadal with 1 more major
Fed with 1 less major but longest ever time at #1?

For me it sure wouldnt be Nadal

Lots of things I don't like about Rafa, but he is GOAT there. Fed fans will say he was won multiple of several majors, yet Fed has only won one RG. Nadal has the 18-10 head-to-head. While that is inflated by 14 clay matches, Rafa has the '08 Wimbledon win and two Aussie Open wins (these are the killer for Fed). All Fed fans have there is that Rafa wasn't good enough to meet Fed at the US Open, but that is Fed's fault the last two years. Weeks at #1 doesn't mean half as much as head-to-head IMO.

I'm not sure they get fined. It's just that it counts as a countable tournament. They take the 19 best tourneys I believe, so if he misses Indian Wells it counts as a tourney.

What's funny is he could play about 8 tournaments a year and retain a top 5 ranking.

Australian Finalist--1200
Indian Wells Semis---360
Monte Carlo win---1000
Rome win---1000
French win---2000
Wimbledon Semis---720
Cincinnati Semis---360
US open Semis---720

That puts him at 7360 which would be 3rd place. And if he took it easy on his knees the above results do not seem unreasonable.

This thread is taking a pointless turn, as Federer is padding his total and Rafa's missing majors. The chance of Nadal not only catching Fed but actually passing him has to be tiny now

I don't see how any reasonable person could disagree.

I think 90% of men would

but I think 1 major doesn't equal the achievement of being #1 for the longest time. - I can see why people would disagree with me however.
while Fed did officially get the record by padding stats I think it does still need to be respected

You'd have to at least think about it with that fantastic hair Fed has, right?
