Brown Top Millet - Dove Fields

How do you know when it is mature?
I planted a dove field for the first time this year, but I planted late. It has rained A LOT since I planted so I was thinking that may have sped the maturity process up. I went check it out this past weekend and was unimpressed, but I don't know what I'm looking for.
A google search reveals to me that it is probably coming along as it should, but I guess I was expecting something else.
It looks similar to this, but the seed is not quite as abundant and it is only about a foot high.
I'm not sure if I should get after it opening day or wait until the second split.
Where the millet experts at?

Will usually get "brown" the seeds i mean.. Cut it, then burn it... Kill shite ton of birds

I thought the seeds usually hardened some and got brown, but all the pictures I can find look like that.

The if all of it looks like that, with a good bit of seed you can go ahead and cut it! And like i said, best results... Burn soon after! They will tear it up

All the millet I ever hunted over was brown.

We've had better results by not burning it

Can you cut some strips about a week prior to season? It will dry out and the seeds become hard just takes a few days. This is some that would be ready for dove season if they hadn't cut out the september season here.

Cut it and burn it! You heard the man. How many acres you got? Cut it and let the stalks die and turn brown then burn it. You better hurry before the season LDWF may bust you! It is possible that it could be baiting

That's the plan. Mine does not look like yours. Its still very green and the seeds are soft. I'll probably wait until the October split to get the most efficiency out of it.

They usually don't do that until October I thought.
Guess I'll have to give it a shot opening weekend.

I was just turning some cows in on my dove field (thought there was a september season here this year but there isn't) and I think I am done planting brown top. I planted brown top, pearl x2, and sugar graze sorghum. I planted the the pearl x2 and sugar graze for cows and the brown top for doves. The doves are coming in droves to the sugar graze and the deer won't leave it alone either. Also it suckers back after cutting and will shoot another head. Just food for thought when you plant next years dove fields
