The last invasion was before the wall. The founding of the nights watch is part of what drove back the other. The last time they came (when the wall was built) was like 4000 years prior I think. I've always wondered if Old Nan might be from north of the wall. Mainly just because of her stories. Although I guess everyone in the north probably hears those stories as a child.
It would be cool if she was like Osha once.
