The last invasion was before the wall. The founding of the nights watch is part of what drove back the other. The last time they came (when the wall was built) was like 4000 years prior I think. Old Nan says they never existed at all and are just myth I believe, or maybe that is Maester Luwin. Regardless Old Nan never witnessed them.
