Just read this whole thread

Is this your first read through the books?
Yep

If you haven't read A Dance with Dragons yet then I could see where you might not think Varys has much going. I'm assuming by that comment that you haven't.
Regardless I'm thinking that was a wrench in his plans. I'm sure he's going to be back with a vengeance and he's just merely biding him time, but Varys being forced to bust Tyrion out and then getting caught was certainly not part of his plans.

And Littlefinger thinks he's running the show. But it's not even close.
Aside from maybe Varys, who is even close to Littlefinger in this regard? I've pretty much proved he's the instigator of the entire series up to the point I've finished, and few people suspect him even though they can see he's growing more and more powerful. The only people who can see Littlefinger for what he really is are Varys and Tyrion.

Most of my thoughts are going to him now. I just don't understand him. He was Master of Coin, could have been Hand, granted Harrenhal all by Lannister who he betray. Now he has the Vale, is trying to get the North via Winterfell/Sansa. I also don't see his end game as King of Westeros. But what does he want? He just keeps on trading titles and land for other titles and lands.
Trying my best to avoid ADWD spoilers, but as of now I do think that Littlefinger is trying to dismantle the system entirely. Yeah he seeks power, but he wants to be the one in complete control.

Trust me. He's not the instigator of the entire series. He may want to be but there are those who have a bigger hand in what is going down.
I don't want to say more because you're avoiding spoilers.

Without Littlefinger, Ned Stark wouldn't have come to King's Landing and shaken up the entire system. Without Littlefinger, Jamie and Cersei wouldn't have been arguing and then having sex afterwords and throwing Bran off the tower. I don't see how he's not an instigator. Here's all I can think of as the primary instigators in the series at least at this point:
Littlefinger
Varys
Illyrio
Tywin Lannister
Roose Bolton
The Queen of Thorns
Melisandre
Am I missing anyone I should be aware of? I was thinking of Tyrion briefly, but he wouldn't have been outsmarted by Littlefinger and would have figured out that Joffrey sent the dagger to kill Bran much sooner.

I'm pretty confident she's dead though.

Just once again Varys > Littlefinger.
Go read ADWD

There are larger things at play then Littlefinger. I'd consider him more of a facilitator. He's a player but he's not THE player if that makes sense.
As said, it's tough to give you reasons why because you haven't read A Dance with Dragons.

Littlefinger is a lot less complex than the other major players and has a huge weakness with his boner for Sansa.

Alright, I can see this. I just thought you were somewhat implying that he was falsely deluding himself into thinking he was a player at all.

I think of Littlefinger as either the guy who thinks he's the power behind the scenes, but is actually being manipulated, himself into helping inact the plans of some greater mastermind (Varys and Illyrio come to mind).
Or, he's the rogue player who has come in to the game and is throwing wrenches into all of these massive plans that he is completely ignorant of.
Regardless, I think it's all going to come back to bite him in the arse and somehow make us all a bit more depressed in the process (typical GRRM style).

I think most would agree he's a player. But he's playing to elevate himself. There are other players who have intentions far bigger then that and with larger influence then he has when it comes to the crown.
The closest Littlefinger would likely get to the crown is on the Council via lands he may attempt to acquire through Sansa. And that's certainly no guarantee.

Personally right now I'm thinking Varys is working with Danerys behind the scenes to get her back on the Iron Throne. Danerys herself hasn't encountered him yet at all, but he's instigating preparing Westeros for her arrival, while Illyrio prepares from the East.

Oh but its so much thicker than that

Tehehehe. Your theories are so cute when you haven't finished the books yet. I remember that naive time.

Sansa will take him out before all is said and done...
I'm convinced

So I'm not even close? I feel pretty confident that Varys is a Targaryan loyalist.
