I'd say it's possible. I just tend to think it's a very small circle (likely just Ned, Howland, and Wylla) for it to have been under wraps for this long.

Benjen suddenly joining the Night's Watch is the only thing that makes me think he knows. He is the younger brother, I know he wasn't next in line, of the Warden of the North. He could have married very well and lived his life out in one of the most prominent houses in the North. But he chose to join a bunch of murderous thieves without explanation. lady brought up a good point with what he told Jon. Not knowing what you are giving up can certainly mean more than what we all thought. Who is Benjen to lecture him on this? He never had children either, so he doesn't know what he gave up either.

Exactly my point . There has to be more about Benjen joining the NW than we know, and like I said, Benjen was very close to Lyanna growing up. He was the Stark in Winterfell during Robert's Rebellion but he did go to the Tourney of Harrenhal, where the Lyanna-Rhaegar relationship 'began'.

And I know there's a theory about why the Starks always have someone go to the Wall, but I don't think Ned ever said anything about sending Bran or Rickon to the Wall when they're older. Jon went, but Jon went moreso because he figured that as a bastard that he wouldn't inherit or be able to do much; plus he had to deal with Catelyn's cruel looks and overall bitchiness/coldness, which made him even feel worse about being a bastard. Jon also would've deserted if it weren't for Sam and his friends; and even thought Qhorin told him to go on a mission, eat with them, become a Wildling, etc. you have to admit that Jon enjoyed fricking Ygritte, no doubt about that.

I personally think that Jon should've waited to go to the Watch, like Benjen had recommended; wait until he was around 18 or so to go rather than 14/barely 15.

In case you missed it, GRRM read another Tyrion chapter from The Winds of Winter at Worldcon 2013.

Here's a brief summary of the chapter.
quote:

Tyrion

Tyrion is with the Second Sons and Jorah, readying for battle. Brown Ben has gone to see the girl general. However, the Second Sons are still on the side of the Yunkai. There are great laments that they are fighting for the wrong side. There is fighting in Slavers’ Bay and under the Wall. The fight will be upon their position soon.

Tyrion watches the sun rise over the battlefield. One of the dragons (he can’t tell which) eats soldiers being flung into the air by one of six things called the Wicked Sisters (apparently some kind of embattlement). “Why do the gods keep putting him into battle?” thinks Tyrion, since he’s not made for it. His thoughts turn first to Shae, then to his first battle at the Green Fork. He remembers the Green Fork better than Blackwater. And the Second Sons saddling up remind him of Bron.

He is not yet in armor, so he returns to his tent. Penny is there, dressed in real armor for her defense. As she helps Tyrion suit up, they talk. When he mentions Cersei, Penny says, “You would sell your sister for a cup of horse piss.” Tyrion has to laugh: “Is my taste for horse piss so famous or have you met my sister?” He then explains his thoughts on strategy for the upcoming battle – a great plan to be heard and followed by no one. And as he remembers his father remaining above the fighting at the Green Fork, Penny kisses him.

Tyrion is enraged. He rants at her about the slaughter of the battlefield and the reality about to invade her innocent world. Penny apologizes, saying she’s frightened. But this echo of Shae makes matters worse. He leaves to see the battle. It is Viserion chowing down on flying soldiers. Rheagal is in sight, however. The camp is in a panic.

A man in golden armor rides up from the Supreme Commander Gorzak (ph). No one in the camp knows who Gorzak is. This man is his emissary and commands them to move to the bay and attack the savages from the squid ships. Tyrion, as a Lannister, is well aware of the Ironborn depredations and is not inclined to follow the command. The Second Sons agree: they are cavalry and can’t walk on water. They decide to wait for Brown Ben to return. The emissary, assuring them of the wrath of Gorzak, departs. Tyrion and Jorah agree – they are fighting for the wrong side.

Viserion withdraws from the skies. Rhaegal still flies, however.

Brown Ben returns. Melessa (ph) wants them to defend a Wicked Sister. Tyrion crudely points out that the girl has nicer breasts. And at that point, a Yunkai nobleman rides up. Tyrion approves of the depraved scene depicted on his armor, but his news is less welcome. The nobleman swears vengeance on the Prince of Tatters and Tyrion mocks him. Brown Ben defends Tyrion from the nobleman until Jorah runs the Yunkai nobleman through.

And Brown Ben proclaims that they have been Queen’s Men all along! Joining the Yunkai was merely a clever ploy. Tyrion isn’t fooled by this, but is happy with the development.

Thanks Hugo. Posters on the ASOIAF forum confirmed that GRRM has read 2 Tyrion chapters at some conventions but no one has posted it on TD.

Also, based on the pattern that George has used for the other books, how many more chapters will he read from before TWoW is released?

Any shot at George reading a Jaime, Cersei, Davos, another aTheon, Sansa, Arya, Bran chapter? I highly doubt he'd read one from Jon or Mel or anyone at the Wall (mainly because he wants to torture us).

popular theory is that the damphair may be the next chapter, and may appear in the paper back ADWD versions. GRRM keeps offering up the chapter at his events but people rather Arianne & Tyrion.

Damphair?
Arianne?

I want GRRM to offer up some good chapters, but I could see why he doesn't want to.

This may sound weird, but I'd love for him to read a Sansa chapter. Have no idea what Littlefinger is up to in the Vale, and there were no ADWD Sansa chapters. But, isn't it true that George said he doesn't want to read Sansa chapters at the conventions because supposedly something 'big' is supposed to happen early on in her POV's that dramatically affect her storyline?

He's said that the Damphair chapter is his best yet, probably gives us a good narrative on Euron or perhaps Damphair may be in the north with Cleftjaw...

tWoW is gonna be sooo fricking sick! Cannot wait! Is it still scheduled to be released in 2014?

Oh and I subscribe to the theory that Benjen is Jon Snow's father. Too obvious for it to be Rhaegar and Lyanna

I highly doubt he'll read a Cersei or Jaime chapter, due to the sheer unknown cliffhanger we were left on those 2 plotlines. We have ideas with the others, but Jaime and Cersei, anything can happen with theirs and be super spoilery.

If Benjen was Jon's father, that would be a major shocker. But who would Jon's mother be? Ashara Dayne??

I subscribe to R&L simply because I don't see why else Ned would keep Jon's parentage a secret.

Depends on how long the book takes really. I'd say he'll read a good 4-5 chapters more at least based on ADWD and AFFC readings. Hopefully the minimum amount since that would mean he has the book written in the least amount of cons visited possible.

I'm starting to freak out a bit. Some of the more pessimistic fans are saying GRRM only has 300 pages written, while others are saying that he is halfway through writing.

I'm not sure who to believe.

He better be more than halfway through. If not, we're completely fricked with the series.

I think the posters on the ASOIAF aren't keeping their hopes up, and some of them were the ones who said GRRM only had 300 pages written. Their fans also have less of a sense of humor compared to the TD ASOIAF/GoT fans, and ban posters for calling George fat . One fan did note, in as PC of wording as he could, that George "has been moving slower lately" :roftlmao:.

With all the chapters he's been reading lately, I highly doubt that he's only written 300 pages; after all, didn't he use a lot of material that was on the ADWD cutting room floor and insert it into TWoW (i.e. those Sansa chapters that we've been anticipating, as well as some battles that are going to occur) ?

I can imagine that David and Dan, and HBO execs are breathing down George's neck to finish. Not gonna lie, but George is kind of an arse when it comes to his fans, or so it seems to me. He only acknowledges them at his nerdy Comic Con deals and book signings. Almost like he hates us all yet we're the ones who made him rich enough to stuff his gut with lemon cakes and Frey pies.

This. I am choosing to believe he is closer to 3/4 done. But if not, he will never finish spring
