That's a really good build (although I'm more of an NVidia fan). With the extra 1k I would bump up to a 512 SSD. These days 128 for the primary drive will fill up before you know it (especially if he wants to bounce between multiple games).

I would use the ssd only for a boot drive and for a couple games that I'm in to at the time. The 2tb hdd would be the primary drive. I think, for the price, crossfired 7970s is one of the best deals you can get
