This, also have the dad play catch with him. I still remember my dad taking me out in the front yard to play catch and that was almost 20 years ago. I can't believe it, time goes so fast.

Also, any advice on how to break in a new glove quickly to make it easier for him to use?

Something about an oven and running over the glove with your car

You can buy them broken in now.

New or used? No time to track down a used one.

Don't be trashy, make sure the kids bathe. I'm sure the helmets parents buy will be similar and I'm sure they would get the helmet mixed up anyway.
I'm sure they don't. I even had a helmet hanger where each kid put their helmet and glove in. Even when we didn't have one we never had one kid wear another's helmet.

Oh and lice =/= "trashy". Not buying your kid a helmet, maybe.

Honest response:

Mizuno Powerclose Glove around 11 inches.

Cheapest baseball cleats you can find (plastic spikes). Nike's should be in the $15-25 dollar range.

Bat. Doesn't matter. Get the cheapest t-ball/coach pitch bat your local Hibbett/Dick's/Academy has.

Would it help to get it wet, then let dry that way? Kind of like new shoes?

I never did that but I've never heard that one either. I wouldn't do it, but that's just me.

Just do new and do what I said. There is a cream you can buy and then stick it in the oven yes, but I never found that to do very much. Maybe its worth the $8 extra to give him a week extra of broken in glove.

Getting a 5 year old a cup sounds pretty unnecessary to me. I don't think it's really that common for kids to have them at that age.

Get a small arse cup. I don't remember wearing one until I got older and the ball was actually hit hard. Anyway, never too early to protect the junk. Get one at a local store or walmart/academy etc.
..catcher is the only postion that wore a cup in all my years of baseball, and I was the catch and I never wore a cup

Have used glove oil when working a glove in. Cheap shaving cream will do the job also.

Sounds like you didn't play much baseball.

Just because you did, doesn't make it right.

Thanks, again! I'm sure my son will appreciate the purchases I made using this advice over what I might have ended up with.

New and I'm not sure about the tee tiny ones. They're all soft patent leather anyway.

When my kids got older I broke down and got them a Nokoma. I think they're kangaroo leather- last forever if taken care of- as will many good quality ones.

They also make some hot oil treatments to break in gloves. Been a while since I had to so don't remember process.

Out of my control either way. Mandatory team equipment.

I agree, but she said the league requires them. Surprised me, they are needed for sure later on.

I agree. I'm guessing for liability purposes they have to tell them to and won't be cup-checking the like Mick Dundee did.
